It’s weekend time, my beautiful Austin! We’ve been yearning for our three-day reprieve since Monday, so let’s jump right in. This weekend, we recommend classic Austin indie, legendary outlaw country, and psycho swing worth staying up late for. Enjoy the music and–as always–listen local!

Fastball w/Scott Reynolds
@ 3Ten Austin City Limits Live (310 E. Willie Nelson Blvd.) – 8:30 p.m. – Tickets
Ready to feel old? Fastball’s breakout record, “All the Pain Money Can Buy,” came out 20 years ago. While I never jumped deep into the album back in ’98, hits like “The Way” and “Out of My Head” soundtracked road trips to the Jersey shore and lazy college afternoons.
In celebration of this milestone, the threesome hits 3Ten on Friday for an evening of blast to the past jams. Hopefully the set will include choice selections from the back catalog to go with the nostalgia trip. But either way, it’ll be a sweet show. Also playing is former ALL frontman, Scott Reynolds.

Ray Wylie Hubbard’s Birthday Bash
@ The Paramount Theatre (713 Congress Ave.) – 8 p.m. – Tickets
Old time country dripping with road worn storytelling and southern rock growl, Ray Wylie Hubbard epitomizes the outlaw country genre. Defined by his wandering, near off-tempo vocal style, Hubbard is a true original.
While classic tunes like 1999’s guitar-driven “Conversation With the Devil” and the slithering stop of “Snake Farm” made him scores of fans, he’s still cranking out rad tunes. Last year’s “Tell the Devil I’m Gettin’ There as Fast as I Can” reads like a deathbed confessional about the best, and worst, of a life spent living hard and living large.
Experiencing this living legend at an iconic venue will be a highlight of your yearly concert-going.
Mr. Lewis and the Funeral 5 w/Nakia, Broken Gold

@ Barracuda (611 E. 7th St.) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event
Mad swing bop in the vein of Squirrel Nut Zippers and Amazing Royal Crowns, Mr. Lewis and his crew of instrument-wielding mad men will celebrate their new record in style. Entitled “Before The World Beat You Down,” the album promises to deliver the same variety of horror cabaret anthems fans have been clamoring for.
For the uninitiated, tracks like the funeral dirge stomp of “Alcohol” and the rumba shaker “My Girl, Suicide” are good places to start. Quiver, dance, and shimmy to this exciting six-piece! Also playing is Austin soul man Nakia and power pop/punk band Broken Gold.
