Summer is finally here, and Austin keeps jamming with another weekend of rad live music. This weekend we present a hip hop showcase at Mohawk, legendary ATX punk, and emotional indie rock with danceable hooks and rhythm. A fine lineup of local acts to keep your ears ringing and feet moving. Enjoy the weekend, and–as always–listen local!
Friday, June 23
Magna Carda, Zeale, and More
@ Mohawk (912 Red River St.) – 8 p.m. – Tickets
Smooth hip hop group, Magna Carda, and storytelling lyricist, Zeale, headline a fantastic lineup of local and non-local artists this Friday at Mohawk. Magna Carda front lady Megz Kelli’s free-form, intoxicating flow bounces beautifully among her backing band’s funk/jazz/R&B groove. Not to be outdone, Zeale lights up the mic with witty, piercing lyrics. He’ll even do a few minutes of freestyle based off audience prompts. Two exceptional reasons to believe in Austin hip hop.
Saturday, June 24
A Giant Dog
@ ABGB (1305 W. Oltorf St.) – 9 p.m. – Tickets
Bouncing between two nationally-recognized acts would be insane for most lead singers, but A Giant Dog and Sweet Spirit front woman, Sabrina Ellis, isn’t your standard songstress. A beacon of high octane, aggressive punk rock since 2008, A Giant Dog continues to crank out new music on an annual basis. Their latest single, “Photograph,” is a delightfully profane yearn to grow old with a lover, bouncing with crunchy riffs and a bopping beat. Never pass up a chance to see this exciting band in action.
Booher
@ Cheer Up Charlies (900 Red River St.) – 10:45 p.m. – $5 at the door
Celebrating their latest record “Funny Tears,” BOOHER takes over Cheer Up Charlies this Saturday. Formally of ATX favorite, Zykos, frontman Michael Booher’s latest project is a headphone-filling blend of guitar fuzz, emotive lyrics, and buoyant, danceable rhythm and rock. Also playing are the surf-rockers in Whalers, Corvette Summers, Austin bubblegum garage pop act, The Dizzease, and the post-punk with horns sound of Brother Superior.
