It’s the weekend, friends! While most will be focusing on the big game this Sunday, that doesn’t mean Friday and Saturday are lost. Far from it! This time around, we recommend a sensational psycho-bluegrass band, beloved Euro-house, and an Austinot favorite’s record release show. Stay safe, enjoy the music, and listen local!
Friday, Jan. 31
Whiskey Shiver w/Mamis, Prom Threat, Queue Queue, Antelope
@ Dozen Street (1808 E. 12th) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event
Take traditional bluegrass, stomping Americana, and psycho-rock, mix them on high, and sprinkle with the stimulant of your choice. That’ll get you halfway to Whiskey Shiver’s unique sound. Mindlessly tapping your foot to scorchers such as “Like a Stone” and “Swarm” is one thing. Experiencing this group live is quite another.
The latest record is a mad collection of covers like only Whiskey Shivers could produce. Come for the blistering shout-and-stomp of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl;” stick around for a powerful take on Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper.” My brain barely handled the band’s deft version of “Sandstorm” by Darude. Yup. Late ’90s Euro trance dressed up as a bluegrass screamer. Incredible stuff by an incredible band.
CAPYAC w/Botany, 5-D, The Vapor Caves, Big Bill, Couduroi, Van Mary
@ Empire Control Room & Garage (606 E 7th) – 8 p.m. – Tickets
Proven masters of party rocking jams, Euro funk luminaries CAPYAC are a must-experience live act. Celebrating the latest single/video “Dirty,” the twosome conjures up delicious electro house with a heavy helping of wit, humor, and undeniable body-shaking rhythm.
While I wasn’t able to snag an advance listen of the track, if it’s anything like CAPYAC’s previous singles, expect yet another musical expansion of its core sound grounded in beautiful groove.
Saturday, Feb. 1
Tomar and the FCs album release w/Stax Records tribute ft. special guests
@ Antone’s (305 E. 5th) – 9 p.m. – Tickets
Speaking of a band I love (and talk up) to death, the incredible Tomar & the FCs celebrates its long-awaited album, “Rise Above,” this Saturday at Antone’s. A swirling storm of pure soul magic, front man Tomar Williams commands the stage like few can.
The new album will command your playlist, as well. “Fine Time” laments lost love among rich gospel backup vocals and a sensational slow burn groove, while the title track begs us all to rise up, be heard, and fight back in favor of love and acceptance.
And don’t get me started on the rocket fueled “Enough is Enough.” Pure Clarence Carter tone with a James Brown slap, the track is the sort of funk-soaked boogie that made me fall in love with the FCs years ago. Rekindle your infatuation this weekend at this must-see show.
