The Austinot Weekend Concert Picks January 24-25, 2020

Welcome to the weekend, friend! The weather’s going to be mild, so why not venture out to the streets of Austin to check out some awesome music? This time around, we suggest an incredible showcase of local talent, a standout band’s album release show, and first-rate indie rock. Enjoy your weekend and listen local!

Friday, Jan. 24

@ Antone’s (305 E. 5th St.) – 7 p.m. – Tickets

Austin Music Foundation is kicking off 2020 in style with a blowout concert and compilation album release. From Calliope Musicals’ electric brand of indie pop to the soulful sounds of Jai Malano, the lineup is nothing short of incredible.

And it’s all for a good cause. The compilation record features new and original music from each of last year’s graduating class. VIP tickets get you a copy of the vinyl LP and two tickets to a sweet after party atop Antone’s.

Free drinks, a silent auction, and DJ Mel spinning tunes make this an easy recommendation for an all-night throw down. Contributing to the continuous development of local music and a sweet concert/party? A recipe for an epic Friday night.

@ Cheer Up Charlies (900 Red River) – 9:30 p.m. – Facebook event

By churning ’60s rock and dance club jams into a genre-bending swirl of musical magic, The Cuckoos are quietly becoming a force in the Austin music scene. Songs like “Heartbreak Paradise” plant satisfying synth and boogie guitar lines atop a tasty groove, while “Carpe Diem” puts lead singer Kenneth Frost’s dramatic vocals in front a rollicking rock-and-roll tune.

This weekend, the four-piece celebrates the release of its latest record, “I Hate Love,” with a cadre of standout Austin bands. Come for The Cuckoos; stay for the floor-shaking rock of Billy King & the Bad Bad Bad, and experimental pop band Indoor Creature. A phenomenal evening of local music in celebration of an up and coming band.

@ The Far Out Lounge & Stage (8504 S. Congress) – 8 p.m. – Facebook event

Explosive indie rock that combines monster effect guitars, two-part harmonies, and first-rate song craft, Marmalakes is a force to be reckoned with.

The group’s most popular single, “Victoria,” is a triumph. Peppered with slice of life lyrics, a jamming bass line, and a huge sing along hook, the song rollercoasters from thoughtful lows to soaring exultation in the space of four minutes.

Other standout tracks from Marmalakes’ 2018 LP, “Please Don’t Stop,” include the bouncy yet chill vibe of “Not Gonna Control You” and the tender acoustic folk ballad “New Sweden.” A wonderful band worth checking out live.
