Another week, another round of local shows worth trudging into the cold to see. For this weekend, we recommend a who’s-who of brilliant Austin musicians, cover show for the ages, and uplifting set of country/rock in a coffee shop. The weekend is coming, so get out there and listen local!
Friday, Jan. 18
Alesia Lani, Aaron Stephens, Kalu & the Electric Joint, Otis Wilkins, Shy Beast, Superfonicos, Western Youth
@ Antone’s (305 E. 5th St.) – 7 p.m. – Tickets
Take a minute to ponder that impressive line up. Presented by AMF and KUTX, the show is a celebration of Austin music. Yes, this Friday night at Antone’s is going to be special. From Alesia Lani’s soulful brand of R&B to Shy Beast’s upbeat, exciting electro-indie pop, this will be an evening of variety and quality. Undoubtedly one of the must-see shows of the month.
Saturday, Jan. 19
Cup of Ambition: A Dolly Parton Birthday Bash w/members of SMiiLE, BOOHER, Lowin, Walker Lukens, Carson McHone, Elizabeth McQueen, more
@ Barracuda (611 East 7th St.) – 8 p.m. – Tickets
Speaking of insane lineups, Barracuda is hosting Cup of Ambition, a yearly celebration of the music of Dolly Parton in support of her Imagination Library charity. Another gallery of Austin’s brightest musicians, including some from Friday’s picks, will be performing Dolly Parton covers. Just don’t expect full band sets. The event page specifically mentions “members of,” so look forward to Austin’s finest doing stripped-down versions of Parton classics. A fun time for a great cause.
Sunday, Jan. 20
Suzaana Choffel
@ Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden (121 Pickle Road) – 8 p.m. – Event calendar
This is going to be a lovely event. Sipping delicious coffee on a lazy Sunday evening, whilst digging Suzanna Choffel’s uplifting blend of country, rock, and blues is my idea of a brilliant start to the week. A fixture of the Austin music scene, Choffel shatters expectations with tight chops, dreamy songwriting, and a smile that lights up a room. Conclude your weekend with what’s sure to be a fabulous performance.
