6th Street Halloween Street Party
Put on your best costume and head to 6th Street on October 31. From Brazos to Red River, the street closes to traffic and fills with a massive costumed crowd.
Elaborate creations, ridiculous getups, pop-culture references, and plenty of questionable costume decisions turn the whole strip into one giant Halloween party in Austin.
The bars along 6th Street also run their own parties with live music, DJs, and costume contests, with covers generally ranging from $10 to $30.
Get there before 9 PM if you want an easier time moving between venues, as the biggest crowds arrive between 9 PM and midnight. Street closures begin at 8 PM, so leave the car at home. Rideshare, pedicabs, and scooters are your best options.
For the full 6th Street Halloween experience, wander the strip, check out the costumes, and duck into whichever bar catches your attention.

For the Halloween edition, costumes are mandatory, and the party is singles-only and 21+. Color-coded name tags make it easier to spot people in your preferred age range, while icebreaker games keep the conversations moving.
Your ticket also gets you exclusive drink specials, and a costume contest with prizes takes place during the night.

Know Before You Go: Halloween Parties Austin Survival Tips
Most of the big Halloween parties are concentrated around Downtown Austin, 6th Street, East 6th, and Rainey Street. If you’re coming in from Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Buda, or Lakeway, plan for extra travel time on Halloween night. Traffic and rideshare demand can climb quickly once the crowds arrive.
- Leave the car at home: Street closures and packed parking lots make driving more trouble than it’s worth. Rideshare, pedicabs, and scooters are easier options, but expect longer wait times and higher fares late at night.
- Check the costume rules: Venues can have their own restrictions on props, masks, and oversized accessories. If your costume includes a prop weapon or covers your face, check the venue’s rules before you head out.
- Wear shoes you can actually walk in: You may spend the night moving between bars, parties, and crowded streets. Comfortable shoes will make a big difference.
- Bring some cash: Not every bar or pop-up takes the same payment methods, and some venues charge a cover at the door.
- Plan your route before you go: Pick a few places you want to hit and check their hours, ticket requirements, and entry rules ahead of time. It’s much easier than figuring it out once you’re in the middle of the Halloween crowd.
Frequently Asked Questions About Halloween Parties in Austin
Where should I go in Austin on Halloween night?
6th Street is the biggest draw, with the street closed to traffic and packed with costumed crowds, bars, DJs, and live music. Rainey Street, East 6th Street, and the Red River Cultural District are good alternatives if you want to spread your night across different bars and venues.
Do I need tickets for Halloween parties in Austin?
It depends on the event. Many bars charge a cover at the door, while larger parties, hotel events, and warehouse raves usually sell tickets in advance. Popular events can sell out, so check the event details before heading out.
Are there costume rules for 6th Street and Austin nightlife venues?
There isn’t one citywide costume rule for every venue, but individual bars and clubs can restrict realistic weapons, sharp props, oversized accessories, and masks that make it difficult to verify your ID. Check the venue’s policy before you leave, especially if your costume involves props or a full-face covering.
What should I wear to Halloween parties in Austin?
Wear a costume you can comfortably walk, stand, and dance in. If you’re planning to hit multiple bars or spend time outside on 6th Street, comfortable shoes are especially important.
