We all want Father’s Day to be special for our dads, but visiting different community calendars and tracking down activities to choose from can take a lot of time. We’ve done the research for you and compiled it into one grand list of things to do on Father’s Day 2013 in Austin!
Live Concerts
The Austin Symphonic Band is performing a special Father’s Day concert at the Zilker Hillside Theater, from 7:30-9 PM on Father’s Day. You’ll enjoy marches, Broadway show tunes and band classics. Feel free to bring a picnic meal and blankets.
Central Market is also hosting a concert starting at 6:30 PM. Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnois King will be playing Blues music and showing off their “smoking” guitar skills. There’s a fun playground located near the stage for your little ones, and food and drink for purchase that you can enjoy with the music. Central Market is located at 4001 N. Lamar Blvd.
Fun Movie Experiences
Steve McQueen will be flexing, risking and racing across the screen at The Alamo Drafthouse on Father’s Day. The Drafthouse website insists that “cheering Steve McQueen and company on with a beer in hand is the absolute best Father’s Day gift imaginable.” The movie shows at Lake Creek at 7 PM and Slaughter Lane at 7:15 PM. The Drafthouse also has a special menu for Father’s Day, including a Steak Sandwich, Loaded Bacon Cheese Burger and Super Loaded Chorizo Queso.
If you still want movie fun, but a slightly different scene, try the Blue Starlite Drive-In on the Eastside. Mr. Mom and National Lampoon’s Vacation will be playing starting at 5 PM. Double feature! You can spread a blanket out in front of your car if you prefer. The address for the Blue Starlite is 1901 E. 51st St.
Art and History
The Umlauf Sculpture Garden is a beautiful and serene stop for Father’s Day, and sculptor Charles Umlauf was a tremendous member of our community who is worth celebrating on this special day! Admission to the grounds is free from June-August 2013. The Umlauf Sculpture Garden is located at 605 Robert E. Lee Rd. by Zilker Park.
The City of Austin offers Austin Historic Walking Tours every weekend. If your Austinite dad has never been on one of these guided tours, you should definitely give it a try! And if he’ll be visiting from out of town for Father’s Day, this is a wonderful way to introduce him to the city you love. The tours will be taking place at 9 AM Saturday, and 11 AM and 1 PM on Sunday. All tours are free, but they require a reservation 48 hours in advance.
Good Eats
The Buzz Mill has a $5 all-you-can-eat flapjack breakfast every Sunday from 10 AM-2 PM. The concept is so unique, and the venue is a lot of fun! Enjoy as many flapjacks as you want for $5, and add on bacon, mimosas or Bloody Mary’s for an additional cost. The Buzz Mill is located at 1505 Town Creek Dr. off of E. Riverside.
The Great Outdoors
If dad wants to stay cool and rugged, a Texas swimming hole is the way to go. Choose from Krause Springs, Blanco State Park, Pedernales Falls, and many others! If you need help deciding which one is best for your dad, just leave us a comment! It’s amazing how many great spots are located an hour or less from Austin.
