For some, the chair massage is a mystical unicorn in the wilderness of the healthcare industry. Does it really work? Where are chair massages available? How do I sit in the chair, and where do my arms go?

The question of whether it works has a simple answer. I believe a massage with a knowledgeable, communicative therapist, of any length of time, can uplift someone’s spirits and make someone’s day. Like anything else regarding health, it is not a silver bullet, especially when dealing with chronic issues. But I can attest to the immediate relief and comfort it provides for countless individuals. As far as where in Austin chair massages are available, I’ve compiled a list of six local, vetted businesses.

(And once you’re in the chair, the therapist will tell you where to put your arms.) [Read more…]

“My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—It gives a lovely light!” This poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay could describe many Austinites, working and playing with all we’ve got. All the more reason to take care of ourselves along the way.

Austin was an early adopter of the wellness movement. Wellness and self-care are buzzy concepts now, and for good reason. We are lucky to reap the benefits of decades of old-school Austin hippies, health nuts, and fitness fiends who paved the way for us. [Read more…]

One of my favorite things about Austin is the atmosphere of collaboration. There’s a professional organization for practically every industry. So when you need people to network with and learn from, your tribe isn’t far away.

Austin Fashion Initiative is a relatively recent addition to the Austin scene. The organization is bringing members of the fashion community together in order to provide new connections, valuable knowledge, and seeds of inspiration for growth.

Meet All the Local Businesses at The LINC in North Austin

If you need a break from tracking down a charged scooter, then soothe your frazzled nerves with an outing to The LINC. The LINC is a one-stop entertainment destination in a former outdoor shopping center (read: it has parking). This north Austin venue offers plenty of fun with one turn of the ignition or a rideshare trip.

Long ago, Austinites flocked to a place known as Lincoln Village to get outfitted for prom or do a quick workout. Times changed, and Lincoln Village emptied out, save for a few holdouts like FedEx and Men’s Warehouse that are still there today.

But in 2013, Misuma Holdings bought the property with the intention of giving Austin businesses a place to expand, especially given other redevelopment in the area.

Entrepreneurship flows within the veins of our city. And while we typically hear about businesses founded by adult Austinites, that doesn’t mean kids can’t participate in the fun. Start-Up Kids Club is a local nonprofit that provides children with the opportunity to found their own start-up business, while learning critical thinking and other skills that propel them through school and life.
