Who Wins the SXSW Music 2023 Superlative Awards?

Posted on March 21, 2023 by Bill Tucker

SXSW Music 2023 Superlative Awards

SXSW Music 2023 Superlative Awards

And just like that, it’s over. Ten days of music, film, activations, parties, and enough tourists to fill a small city completely have receded back to the cultural ocean. And throughout my travels, I listened, learned, and discovered. Despite the massive inconveniences, I still maintain SXSW is a worthwhile experience and a tentpole event on the Austin calendar. There’s simply nothing like it.

As I do every year, I’ve distilled my experience into a series of silly awards much like you would find in a high school yearbook. Because what better way to celebrate a week and a half of musical exploration than give our local music community the high five it deserves in the silliest way possible?

Biggest Overachiever – Why Bonnie

Why Bonnie at SXSW 2023 (credit: Bill Tucker)

As anybody who’s ever performed at SXSW will tell you, it’s all about the hustle. Most official artists will play multiple shows aside from their SXSW set, which could be at a small club at 1:00 AM. It’s not uncommon to hear of a band doing five or six shows throughout the week. If you’re making the trip to Austin from anywhere around the world, you might as well make the most of the trek, even if it’s exhausting.

Which makes what local indie dream pop band Why Bonnie did damn near miraculous. The five-piece did a whopping 12 shows over the course of  six days. Their busiest day was Thursday where they played three shows in the span of six hours. And when I saw them at midnight at the 13th Floor, you would have never known they were doing show number six in the three days. They still delivered a moving, groovy set in the midst of SXSW mayhem. Why Bonnie, I salute your drive. Here’s hoping this week brings rest after the performance marathon.

Genre of the Year – Latin/Cumbia/Salsa

Carmelo Haze at SXSW 2023 (credit: Bill Tucker)

SXSW offers a rich tapestry of musical styles and genres. It’s the main reason why I love it. But out of the eight festivals I’ve been lucky enough to cover, this year, there was a clear cut winner in the genre wars (if such a thing exists): Austin’s ever evolving Latin music community. Initiated by Grupo Fantasma and surged forward by the likes of Gina Chavez, Los Coast and Cilantro Boombox, every cumbia, salsa or Columbian funk showcase I experienced this year was pure fire.

From Carmelo Haze’s hip swaying set at Stubb’s to an incredible Hotel Vegas dance party fueled by Superfonicos, Money Chicha and El Cumbo Oscuro to Como Las Movie’s electric Saturday night Sheraton BACKyard showcase, south of the border sway was in full display. Along with hip hop, Latin music’s rise to tentpole of the ATX music quilt is nothing short of meteoric and most of all, welcome. My 40 year old hips and knees still ache from all the swaying.

Most Likely to Have a Breakout 2023 – Pelvis Wrestley

Pelvis Wrestley at SXSW 2023 (credit: Bill Tucker)

When Pelvis Wrestley completed their Saturday night set as Esther’s Follies, I made a point of walking up to frontman Benjamin Violet and thanked him for making my end of SX special. By blending campfire country with synth pop hooks and adding a dash of the dramatic, Pelvis Wrestley concocts earworm tunes laced with honest emotion and depth. Starting out as a random band I checked out based on the strength of their name and convenient set time, this fascinating four piece is my the Lord Friday the 13th of SXSW 2023 – an incredible discovery I can’t wait to experience again.

Class Bad Ass – BONDBREAKR

BONDBREAKR at SXSW 2023 (credit: Bill Tucker)

When I selected thrash metal upstarts BONDBREAKR for my yearly SXSW top ten article, I knew I had to experience them live. And what better way to do so than in the cramped dingy backyard of Latchkey on East 6th. Even in the midst of the most blistering sets SXSW showcases can be a staid, orderly affair. Groups of people standing quietly, rocking out on the inside.

BONDBREAKR broke through. Fueled by lead vocalist Gerilyn Hayes-McColskey’s primal screams and force of presence, the small space turned into a mosh pit, locals and conventioneers alike thrust themselves into a metal frenzy. Bodies slamming bodies in the midst of BONDBREAKR’s pure mayhem reminded me of the power of good metal – cathartic, powerful and transformative.

Best Couple – Jane Leo

JaneLeo performing at SXSW 2023 (credit: Bill Tucker)

When Jane Ellen Bryant moved from sensitive Austin country/blue to fem power pop, I saluted the move. When Leopold and his Fiction disappeared from my eyeline after an amazing SXSW 2017, I wondered where he went. Now that the two have paired up, the result is the best of both worlds. By linking Bryant’s buoyant vocals with Leo’s flair for the dramatic and rock star charm, the duo put forth a shining set during the chilly Saturday afternoon 101X day party. A pairing and a performance not soon to be forgotten.

The Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award – Chaka and Qi Dada of Riders Against the Storm

Chaka of Riders Against the Storm at SXSW 2023 (credit: Bill Tucker)

If you were pressed to pick a top 10 most influential Austin artists list, there are some obvious choices. Willie, Stevie, Roy. Maybe throw in Roky Erickson, Daniel Johnston, and anything touched by Mr. Quesada. And for good measure, toss in Spoon, Sabrina Ellis, and Shakey. No matter your list, you have to leave in Chaka and Qi Dada of Riders Against the Storm.

During this year’s festival, Chaka’s DAWA (an organization dedicated to supporting fellow groups serving the un-homed and homeless) showcase at Stubb’s, proved not only his influence on the Austin music community, but his heart for unity, giving and the city as a whole. A tireless advocate for the underrepresented, both Chaka and Qi Dada are vanguards of local philanthropy and civic change. And their music still bumps with the best of them, as evidenced during their Saturday set at Speakeasy Ballroom. An incredible duo both behind the mics and in front of government.

Class President – THEBROSFRESH

THEBROSFRESH performing at SXSW 2023 (credit: Bill Tucker)

The yearly Sonic Guild (formally Black Fret) SXSW day party is the perfect mid week palette cleanser. As somebody who spends their entire journalistic endeavors in the local music community, one relaxed place to listen to Austin artists is a unique treat. And while the concerts are rarely raucous parties, at least by SX standards, the vibe is one of respectful good times.

THEBROSFRESH, the New Orleans turned Austinite duo of Torrence and Thurman Thomas changed the tone for the better. By unleashing wave after wave of Louisiana boogie mixed with ATX blues/rock and soul-ladden R&B groove, the Bros transformed the good natured Sonic Guild crowd to a true SXSW day party. And that’s what the festival and conference is all about. Discovering new and exciting music that transforms the polite gatherings into dance-offs, showcases into jams. And they do so with skill, chops and pure showmanship. Of all the incredible SXSW showcases I experienced last week, THEBROSFRESH left the biggest mark and as such, earns the most coveted superlative award. Congrats, my bros. Looking forward to huge things from you in 2023.

10 Must-see Austin Artists at SXSW 2023

Posted on March 4, 2023 by Bill Tucker

Local Artists at SXSW 2023

The slow descent of Austin into a Musk fueled tech town is in full swing. Austin’s transformation from sleepy hippie hamlet to bustling mini-Dallas is almost complete. Mourn, my friends. The magic is waning.

Luckily, one of the central tentpoles of the Austin experience is still intact – our music community. In the wake of high rises and Telsa plants, ATX continues to produce world class music in great abundance. Every genre imaginable is represented. From blues to country to hip hop to synth pop, the Live Music Capital of the World continues to thrive in the dust of shattered businesses and mass gentrification.

So, rather than sob, let’s celebrate. This year’s SXSW collection of local talent is as robust as ever, with new and old talent alike. From bubbling under up and comers to legends of the scene, my yearly Top 10 aims to paint a broad, vibrant picture of the local music tapestry. Let’s dive in!

As always, a few notes:

  1. I’ve been doing this for years. If an artist you love isn’t represented, they were likely featured in a previous list. You can read my yearly articles here: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022
  2. Concerned about that 1 a.m. start time? Many of the bands on this list are playing multiple shows. Check out their social media accounts and websites for more information.
  3. This list is in alphabetical order, not best to worst.

1/ Billy King & The Bad Bad Bad

Billy King and the Bad Bad Bad (credit: artist EPK)

Part psych, part blues, part Southern rock and all snarl, Billy King’s aggressive middle-finger forward sound is as stirring as it is bold. “Possession of Paul Revere” tells the story of a maniac gone wild on a 60’s psychedelia vibe while “Werewolf of Love” runs laps on a track of pounding four-on-the-floor drums and King’s screaming guitar leads. A combination of power, soul and head trip sway, Billy King is a force to be reckoned with.

When: March 17th, 9 – 9:40 PM at The Creek and the Cave Backyard

2/ BONDBREAKR

BONDBREAKR threatens to tear up SXSW 2023.

Speaking of growling rage and righteous anger, BONDBREAKR tears stages asunder with teeth-bared snarl and sneer. “Polite Society” screams along a driving, delicious riff while “Kill Your Gods” smacks eardrums with primal fury. If you dig rock with a razor’s edge, this bubbling under Austin four-piece will satisfy the animal inside.

When: March 15th, 10:30 – 11 PM at Latchkey

3/ Como Las Movies

Como Las Movies (credit: Press Junkie PR)

Call it a phase, call it a fling, call it what you will. The Latin music pouring from our fair city has never been stronger. Como Los Movies feels like the next evolution from Superfonicos, Gina Chavez, and anything helmed by Adrian Quesada. By implementing tight synth into their sultry, swaying cumbia, this electric four piece bridges genres like the bat laden overpass on South Congress. Infinitely danceable, their SXSW showcase at the Sheraton BackYARD will be a party unlike any other.

When: March 18th, 9 – 9:40 PM at the Sheraton BackYARD

4/ Dale Watson

Dale Watson Performing

Dale Watson will be ringing in Christmas with his brand of toe tapping honky tonk. (credit: starbright31 via Flickr CC)

If you’ve never heard of Dale Watson, welcome to Austin. You’re likely a recent transplant from New York or LA and I welcome to you our fair city. With a career that spans decades of outlaw country and honkey tonk, Watson’s years of blessing the Broken Spoke and sending up Saxon are the stuff of legends. A midnight showing on the last day of the festival at the historic Continental Club will be a fitting end to your SXSW Music experience.

When: March 18th, 12AM – 1:45 AM at the Continental Club

5/ Daniel Fears

Daniel Fears performs at the Sonic Guild Black Ball 2022 (credit: Bill Tucker)

Smoother than Nutella with twice the flavor, Daniel Fears draws direct comparisons to early John Legend in terms of pure emotional weight and technical chops. “Keep On” beseeches an unknown lover to maintain during turbulent times while “No Gravity” dips and pops across a thick, tasty R&B groove. Designed to illicit naughty thoughts salted with a healthy dose of relational honesty, Daniel Fears is an artist of depth, soul and emotional truth.

When: March 16th, 8 PM – 8:40 PM at Sheraton BackYARD

6/ Invoke

4 piece Invoke will be performing at SXSW 2023. (credit: Nathan Russell)

With the rise of artists like Billy Strings and more locally, Wood & Wire, bluegrass music is the new old hotness. By blending traditional four-on-the-floor fiddling with jazz, ambient and classical influences, Austin quartet Invoke creates music of complexity and depth while maintaining the down home accessibility of the genre. Top marks go to their latest single, “Burlywood”. Bedrocked by satisfying banjo picking and mandolin strums, the tune allows principal violinist Zach Matteson to let his instrument soar. Meanwhile, “The Trace” off 2015’s Souls in the Mud EP moves from serene to stirring in the space of its five minute runtime. Sublime music performed by four masters of the art.

When: March 15th, 11:15 – Midnight at Parker Jazz Club

7/ Riders Against the Storm

Elizabeth McQueen and Riders Against the Storm

Elizabeth McQueen featured Riders Against the Storm

Vanguards of the ATX hip hop community for over a decade, Riders Against the Storm have been doing just that. Riding a laser blast of socially conscious hip hop through the hearts of music fans and city officials alike. Half music act, half activists, RAS continues to churn out banger after banger while still supporting the city in their own unique way. On their latest single, “Go!” allows vocalist Qi Dada bless the track atop a traditional reggae beat while “The Sheriff” blends RaS socially conscious verse with an edgy, aggressive Bright Light Social Hour snarl track. Legends of the art, worth every second of their set.

When: March 18th, 11 PM – 11:30 PM at Speakeasy Ballroom

8/ Shooks

Shooks (credit: band website)

Pure energy distilled into a brooding indie rock sound, Shooks takes cues from bands like Phoenix and Passion Pit to create an intoxicating vibe. One of my surprise favorites from this year’s ACL Fest, Martin Sexton (yes, that Sexton) leads his quartet with sultry, emotional lyrical flair. “Furio” slinks across layered synth and a tasty rhythm while their latest release, “Drama”, pulses across a stage worthy post punk anthem. An incredible live act worthy checking out at your earliest opportunity.

When: March 14th, Midnight – 12:40 AM at Valhalla

9/ Trouble in the Streets

Austin hip hop/rock upstarts Trouble in the Streets won Best New Austin Band at the 2018 Austin Music Awards, (credit: Bill Tucker)

New music by Trouble in the Streets? Yes, please! A stunning amalgamation of hard nosed hip hop, rage-ready rock and sultry soul, Trouble is ever evolving. “Dreaming of Forever” dances across a funk friendly bass line while their latest effort, “Can I Breathe” growls a timely call for unity during a dissonant time. And “Pyramid Scheme” on 2016’s Electro Tribe remains a stone cold classic. It’s been years since I caught them live on Mohawk’s secondary stage and I’ll be waiting in line to experience them again.

When: March 18th, 1 AM to 1:50 AM at The Creek and the Cave Backyard

10/ Why Bonnie

Why Bonnie seeks to bring their ear candy dream pop to SXSW 2023.

A beautiful expression of looking for light on a cloudy day, Why Bonnie stirs the evocative emotion of shoegaze with a wavy headtrip groove that’s simply stunning. The title track off 2022’s “90 in November” sends listeners on an early 2000’s indie emo trip while their latest single, “Apple Tree”, jazzes things up while maintaining Blair Howerton smooth dream pop sensibilities. These days, music is either a bop or a vibe, and Why Bonnie firmly plants themselves in the latter while continuing to evolve.

When:

March 14th, 9 – 9:40 PM at Cheer Up Charlies Outdoor

March 16th, Midnight – 12:40 PM at The 13th Floor

Date Ideas Austin – 20 romantic things to do during day and night!

Posted on February 4, 2023 by Eliza Weeks

Huge List of Unforgettable Austin Date Spots

Date Ideas Austin

Recently I found myself wrapped up in one of those fleeting moments of self-empowerment, tickled by a craving for adventure. Interested in re-entering the dating pool, but also daunted by how exhausting the process can be, I decided the only way to start dating was to cannonball in. So I created a challenge for myself: I would go on 25 dates during my 25th year.

This was invigorating, but when you tell yourself you’re going to go on a date, you have to have some destinations in your arsenal. The problem is that I’m a chronic searcher. I don’t have one favorite place to eat, drink or be merry in Austin.

Add a date to the mix and the decision becomes more complicated. Friends can be forgiving of the loud crowd or a dinner that was too experimental, but dates are often people you don’t know well. With these concerns in mind, I decided the best thing would be to compile a list of fail-safe date destinations in Austin. Because when sexual tension and awkward expectations are in the air, you want everything else to be simple.

If you find yourself searching for ‘fun date ideas Austin’ or ‘date ideas near me’ or ‘places to go on a date near me’ I have you covered! Check out my curated list of the Best Date Night or Day Ideas in Austin!

Editor’s Note: Our staff works hard to bring you the latest information. However, all information mentioned in this article is subject to change. As always, please confirm before heading out.

Date Ideas Austin – Date Night at Not Your Average Dive Bar

A first date over drinks is a time-honored tradition. There’s no big commitment. If after one drink you decide you aren’t right for each other, you simply take a last sip, payout, and say your amicable goodbyes. If you are connecting, you can hit up the inevitable restaurant close by. Either way, with these cocktail lounge ideas, you’ll have a good place to start a date and perhaps find a new favorite bar!

Annual Austin Black Fret Black Ball 2022 Gives $250k to Local Artists

Posted on November 29, 2022 by Bill Tucker

Austin Black Fret Black Ball 2022 - American Dreamer

Ever since Black Fret’s inaugural year in 2013, they’ve been supporting the Austin music community in unique and special ways. And the yearly Black Ball, a concert celebration of all things ATX music, is the culmination of a years worth of sounds, stages, and stunning philanthropy. We eagerly await the Black Fret Black Ball every year and hope you consider joining this incredible collective of music lovers as they give money and change lives.

What is Black Fret and the Black Ball?

Austin Black Fret Black Ball 2022 - Darkbird at the 2021 Ball

Started by Matt Ott and Colin Kendrick in 2013, Black Fret’s mission is to support the Austin music community through member-supported grants. Much like an orchestra or theater, members pay yearly dues which are in turn given to the artists. In return for their dues, members are treated to exclusive listening sessions in unique, intimate venues around town. All the artists playing these shows are 100% local and fairly paid.

With that money, Black Fret provides grants to a set number of artists as voted by the members. Every year, the number of members and grants increases. But Black Fret doesn’t cut a check and leaves them hanging. They allocate the funds as needed for studio time, equipment needs, promotion, etc. The organization also provides counseling and membership from an industry leader on how best to spend that money.

This year, Black Fret will award $250,000 in grants to member-selected Austin artists at the annual Black Ball. The event feels like a “concert mix tape”. The Moody stage is split into two sections, each artist gets a side. While artist A is performing, the opposite side of the stage is being set up for Artist B. And back and forth it goes. It’s extraordinary to watch as it always goes without a hitch. 18 of the 20 nominated artists will perform at the event making the Black Ball an incredible showcase of the best of Austin music.

And the Winners of Austin Black Fret Black Ball 2022 Are…

Austin Black Fret Black Ball 2022

On Saturday, December 3rd, the following artists will receive a combined $250,000 to be used to enhance and grow their music careers:

  • Abhi the Nomad
  • Annabelle Chairlegs
  • Aubrey Hays
  • Blackillac
  • Bonnie Whitmore
  • Buffalo Nichols
  • Daniel Fears
  • Graham Weber
  • Indoor Creature
  • Jo James
  • KVN
  • Me Nd Adam
  • Mélat
  • Money Chicha
  • Natalie Price
  • Nik Parr and The Selfless Lovers

Sounds Rad. I’m In! Hit Me With the Deets!

Black Ball 2022 takes place on Saturday, December 3rd at the Moody Theater, doors at 6:00 for members. Black Ball is a private event for members, guests, sponsors, and former winners. But if you’re dying to attend, there’s an easy way: become a member! Membership tiers can be found at blackfret.org/join and will grant you instant access to the Ball. Not only do gain access to an incredible evening of music, but your social calendar will also be full for the coming year. I’ve been attending Black Fret events and showcases for years and some of my most treasured ATX music experiences came from those performances.

Whether you sign up as a member or donate to the cause (http://blackfret.org/donate), you’re doing an immeasurable service to the Austin music community and positively impacting the careers of dozens of artists. You can’t call Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World” without a vibrant ecosystem to support that claim and organizations like Black Fret are doing what they can to keep the beat bumping in the ATX.

And in the end, Black Ball is a party. A homecoming where music lovers and artists combine to celebrate an amazing year of creativity, positivity, and musical magic. It’s one of my personal highlights of the year and I hope it becomes one of yours as well.
