Lights of Love 5K Breaks Records for Children and Their Families

Posted on December 11, 2012 by Eric Highland

Caleb's Army Keri Bellacosa Lights of Love 5K

Keri Bellacosa interviews Caleb from Caleb’s Army, the top fundraising team this year

As night fell on December 7th, 3,500 people gathered in and around the Mueller Hangar off Airport Blvd. They had one thing in common: they were all there to support one extremely worthwhile cause here in Austin. Age didn’t matter; heart did.

Costumes, lights and good spirits abounded as the stage was set for the 5th annual Lights of Love 5K. This is one of the major fundraising initiatives that keeps the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin open and active throughout the year. [Read more…]

With The Highball Closed, How Does The Common Interest Measure Up?

Posted on December 5, 2012 by Laura Darby

The Common Interest Austin Bar

The Common Interest

Last month after The Highball shut its doors for a year, I started a pilgrimage to find a decent replacement that had the charm and engaging side activities of The Highball.  After pricey disappointment and a lack of karaoke at The Goodnight, I decided to try an Austin karaoke standard: The Common Interest Karaoke Bar and Grill.

Both The Highball and The Goodnight have very swanky interior décor, one more intentionally than the other. The Common Interest, however, is *straight 80’s*. It’s not called The COMMON Interest for nothing. [Read more…]

Dionysium: Stimulate the Senses Through Debate, Theatre and Music

Dionysium Austin Toast

Dionysium hosts L.B. Deyo and Buzz Moran offer a toast to Dionysus

This guest blog post is by Leah Kaminsky.

When I decided to move to Austin, I knew I was headed to a music town. But little did I know that my new home city would also be home to the coolest debate event this side of the Rio Grande: Dionysium, a monthly verbal smackdown that features a motley crew of experts culled from a diversity of subject areas.

To understand how the words “coolest” and “debate” could possible keep each other company, you’ve got to leave the stereotypes at the door. [Read more…]

The Highball Faces Year Long Closure, Does The Goodnight Measure Up?

Posted on November 26, 2012 by Laura Darby

The Highball Austin Closed for Renovations

Searching for a substitute to The Highball

Editor’s Note: As of May 2018, The Goodnight on West Anderson Lane has closed. A new location is planned for West Sixth Street.

This past week marked the last we’ll see of The Highball for at least a year, while they complete renovations that are part of the Alamo South Lamar complex takeover.

What will Austinites do in the interim?

As a faithful patron of the Highball, I’m taking it upon myself to find out. [Read more…]

You’ve Never Seen Anything Like Showdown at Unobtainium

Posted on November 14, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

Sparks flew during Showdown at Unobtainium this past weekend in Unobtainium, Texas. The town is a small, mostly fictional, place caught in the late nineteenth century.

More importantly, it’s the site of a climactic battle between two of history’s most infamous scientists, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Both men are fighting for their inventions, reputations and lives as bullets and zeppelins fly overhead à la the Old West. [Read more…]

To Live or Livestrong: Personal Reflection on Livestrong Ride Austin

Posted on October 30, 2012 by Guest Blogger

Elizabeth Quintanilla at Livestrong Ride AustinThis guest blog post is by Elizabeth Quintanilla

I shouldn’t be alive today, but I am. In 2002, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease and not expected to live. There were doctor visits upon doctor visits.

Additionally, I had to face the challenge of figuring out how to keep a job for medical insurance that would pay for most of the services and prescriptions. There’s nothing worse than realizing you are under-insured and have a monthly pharmacy payment in excess of $400 because you ran out of prescription benefits.

Though I haven’t had cancer, I can empathize with those who are or have faced challenges due to cancer. We all know someone who has had cancer. Some of us smile at the cancer survivors in our lives today, and some do not. I choose to support Livestrong because of the difference they make in the fight against cancer. [Read more…]
