The Highball Faces Year Long Closure, Does The Goodnight Measure Up?

Posted on November 26, 2012 by Laura Darby

The Highball Austin Closed for Renovations

Searching for a substitute to The Highball

Editor’s Note: As of May 2018, The Goodnight on West Anderson Lane has closed. A new location is planned for West Sixth Street.

This past week marked the last we’ll see of The Highball for at least a year, while they complete renovations that are part of the Alamo South Lamar complex takeover.

What will Austinites do in the interim?

As a faithful patron of the Highball, I’m taking it upon myself to find out. [Read more…]

You’ve Never Seen Anything Like Showdown at Unobtainium

Posted on November 14, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

Sparks flew during Showdown at Unobtainium this past weekend in Unobtainium, Texas. The town is a small, mostly fictional, place caught in the late nineteenth century.

More importantly, it’s the site of a climactic battle between two of history’s most infamous scientists, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Both men are fighting for their inventions, reputations and lives as bullets and zeppelins fly overhead à la the Old West. [Read more…]

To Live or Livestrong: Personal Reflection on Livestrong Ride Austin

Posted on October 30, 2012 by Guest Blogger

Elizabeth Quintanilla at Livestrong Ride AustinThis guest blog post is by Elizabeth Quintanilla

I shouldn’t be alive today, but I am. In 2002, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease and not expected to live. There were doctor visits upon doctor visits.

Additionally, I had to face the challenge of figuring out how to keep a job for medical insurance that would pay for most of the services and prescriptions. There’s nothing worse than realizing you are under-insured and have a monthly pharmacy payment in excess of $400 because you ran out of prescription benefits.

Though I haven’t had cancer, I can empathize with those who are or have faced challenges due to cancer. We all know someone who has had cancer. Some of us smile at the cancer survivors in our lives today, and some do not. I choose to support Livestrong because of the difference they make in the fight against cancer. [Read more…]

Well, look no further! Easter Seals Central Texas’ Walk With Me event is perfect for people of all athletic abilities and supports our friends, family and neighbors with disabilities.

On November 11, 2012 we will once again take over the beautiful grounds of The Domain in North Austin for a family friendly 1 mile walk and a self-timed 5K run.

Think, for a moment, about how much you love running and being active in your community. Now, imagine that you’ve just been informed that you’ll never be able to do either of these again.  [Read more…]

The Wheeler Brothers Fire Up Stubb’s to Protect Waller Creek

Posted on October 23, 2012 by Brittany Highland

Stubb's BBQ in Austin, TexasThe eve of ACL 2012 had security’s panties in a knot, as long lines formed outside Stubb’s back lot. Despite the warm invitation from the Wheeler Brothers’ publicist, our Canon 7D became a liability and Eric and I wondered whether our established threesome would make it through the gates.

The five members of the Wheeler Brothers opened their set while we jumped through hoops outside. But with a photographer wristband attached firmly to Eric’s wrist, we earned our entrance and he edged his way toward the stage. As he positioned himself for close-ups, security approached again. Photos were only allowed during the first three songs.

Fascinated that our Austin musical events have adopted such an excess of legislation, my faithful photog used his powers of persuasion effectively. He talked his way into [Read more…]

Comedian Chris Cubas Speaks Out About Cosby, Austin Comedy & Hecklers

Posted on October 18, 2012 by David Thomas

Chris Cubas Comedian in Austin, Texas

Chris Cubas sits down across from me at a Jack-N-The Box, takes a sip from a grape Sprite and we talk about comedy, Austin, venues, and ever-present hecklers.

“I bought a Bill Cosby cassette tape at the store,” he begins. “I took it with me to school and ran a headphone wire up my sleeve. I would sit like this (he rests his head on his hand as if he was tired) and listen to it until the batteries in my cassette player died. I bought the video too and would watch it. I watched how he held the mike, and how he used his voice to control the crowd. He was a great storyteller. He did a fifteen minute bit called ‘To Russell My Brother, Whom I Slept With.’ Who else can talk for fifteen minutes about something like that and make it funny?” [Read more…]

Ben Kweller and Joe Pug Fill Austin’s Continental Club

Posted on October 16, 2012 by Guest Blogger

The Continental Club Sign in AustinThis guest blog post is by Janet Jay.

It was a late show, but October 4th saw the Continental Club packed to the rafters to see Ben Kweller and Joe Pug perform. The two artists share many similarities: both live in Austin, both are multi-instrumentalists, both draw from blues and folk in their music.

It makes sense that the place would be packed. These are local boys, and many of those in attendance grew up listening to Ben Kweller. And really, Kweller grew into adulthood right along with his fans. While the Greenville native saw success when he was in his early teens, Kweller’s solo career began with the hit album Sha Sha at age 19…though he looked about 12. (Sorry, Ben.) Now at 30 [Read more…]
