Austin proudly became a No Kill city in 2010. A few years later, The Huffington Post named Austin one of the safest U.S. cities for dogs and cats. Great work, Austin. I’m proud to call you home!
When you’re ready to let a furry friend invade your heart and home, help us stay No Kill by adopting a dog, cat, or even bunny from an Austin animal shelter. Below are seven local rescue groups that will help you get matched to your perfect animal companion. And don’t forget to spay and neuter, like Bob Barker always said!
1/ Austin Pets Alive!

This beloved No Kill animal shelter is pretty much the OG of Austin rescue shelters. Since 2008, Austin Pets Alive! has saved more than 50,000 dogs and cats from euthanasia in the Central Texas area. Stop by the Cesar Chavez location to check out heartier dogs, like labs and pit bulls. There are also plenty of cats. The Tarrytown location is better for smaller dogs and cats.
Can’t commit to caring for a rescue, but want to get involved? Sign up to volunteer to walk dogs or love on some kitties!
