If you see a need for something, then why not just figure out how to fill it? Lauren Cunningham did just that when she created Austin’s co-working space, The Commune. There’s a twist, though. It’s specifically designed and outfitted for local creatives and artists.
The Commune invites both community and creativity with artist studios and work stations. You’ll want to check out this beautiful space, whether through a membership or through stopping by for an event.
Creating Community at The Commune
Cunningham was just coming off a four-year hiatus from work. She had taken time for herself after having children. But when it was time to jump back into the creative scene for work, she wasn’t able to find a co-working space designed for artists. So she created her own.
When Cunningham started looking for the perfect location to build her space, she was drawn to North Loop. She chose a graffiti-covered building that had been empty for almost 10 years. The neighborhood was thrilled to see this old building transformed into something beautiful and community-focused.
“North Loop is very eclectic. We’re surrounded by colorful local vintage shops, and it felt like the perfect place for this concept. Especially since the area was so lacking in creative workspaces,” Cunningham shared.
Co-working for Creatives
The name Commune was inspired by the overall goal of the space: community. There are seven private artist studios, eight dedicated desks, community work tables, and a lounge area. By the time of grand opening, The Commune was already so popular there was a waiting list for private studios.
In addition to working spaces, the building features the following:
- kitchen
- photo studio
- private phone booths
- canvas storage
- easels
- mess sinks
- design resource library
There are two types of membership options for The Commune: day passes and monthly rates. Members have access to the photo studio, conference room, kitchen, printers, and scanners. The design resource library is a wonderful perk Cunningham is excited to share with members, as well. It has Pantone books, paint fan decks, paper sample books, and a ton of other fantastic resources.
You don’t need to be a member to enjoy the goodness. Non-members have the option to rent either the conference room or photo studio during the day. You are also able to rent out the space on workday evenings or all-day on weekends, for groups of up to 50 people.
Events and Workshops
Expect to see all of your favorite workshops at The Commune. These creative events are open to the public and will include classes like:
- DIY happy hour workshops
- textile weaving
- mommy and me ceramics
I’m all about doing crafting while sipping on my fave cocktail, so I’m excited to attend something from that series in the future.
The Commune will also host art classes, yoga and wellness events, and educational panels. Cunningham has partnered with Brown State of Mind to host a free education series called Brown State University. I’m also excited to see the collaboration with #bossbabesATX later this year!
