Brunch is one of the best things about winding down for the weekend, especially when you’ve had a hell of a week. Callie Speer knows this and has upped the ante in the restaurant scene with her new venture, Holy Roller.

Why wait for weekend brunch when you can have it every day? After working her way through Austin at big name eateries such as Swift’s Attic and Geraldine’s, Speer opened Holy Roller earlier this year to much anticipation from brunch-loving Austinites.

Parkside’s second floor patio overlooks historic 6th Street

Parkside on Sixth Street has been a significant influence in the developing culinary landscape of Austin. The restaurant opened back in 2008 as one of the first to bring the farm-to-table concept to our city.

Summer Social Series Spotlights Talented Chefs

Parkside’s newest event, Summer Social Series, is designed to introduce Austinites to creative, upscale bar food prepared by some of the most talented chefs in the country. Three summer 2017 events feature three guest chefs who will work alongside Parkside’s own executive chef, Nathan Lemley. [Read more…]

Cocktails, Bar Food and Brunch at Revelry Kitchen + Bar on East Sixth

Murals Revelry Kitchen and Bar

While the word revelry means “lively and noisy festivities, especially when these involve drinking a large amount of alcohol,” according to Oxford Dictionary, don’t let Revelry Kitchen + Bar fool you. Their food inspires just as much merriment as their cocktails. Even better, all the festivities won’t leave you broke.

One of the newest spots on East Sixth Street, Revelry strives to give revelers an affordable, boisterous and inviting choice among the many watering holes in the area. I went for Sunday brunch and stayed for the drinks. Every aspect of Revelry Kitchen + Bar is on point. Here’s all you need to know before heading there. [Read more…]

Taste Emotional Italian Food at Chef Curren’s Italic Restaurant

November 30, 2016 by Yulia Dyukova 2 Comments

Italic Austin Interior

Inside Italic on West Sixth Street

Do you know an easy way to find out how good the food is in a restaurant? Order a dish made of vegetables. When you order a pasta with meat sauce that has been slow-cooked for hours, or a pizza with cheese bubbling on top, you know it’s going to be good. But if a chef can turn zucchini into a dish even a carnivore would adore and make roasted carrots burst with flavor, rest assured you are in the right place. [Read more…]

What’s New at Z’Tejas? Hatch Chile Feast, Cocktails and Cornbread for a Cause

Z'Tejas Cocktail and Bartender

On occasion, I enjoy a cocktail in downtown Austin. Oh, who am I kidding? Most nights, I’m on a bar stool. Living close to the famous Sixth Street, I probably have too many choices to revisit any place more than once or twice. But the one spot that keeps me coming back is Z’Tejas, for two reasons: 1) my favorite bartender, Chelsea, whose margaritas could probably fix global warming, and 2) the mac and cheese.

Recent changes at Z’Tejas have given me a few more reasons. [Read more…]

Guide to Austin’s West Sixth Street

Guide West Sixth Street Austin

There are three sections of Sixth Street in Austin: West, East and what locals refer to as Dirty. For locals, Dirty Sixth runs from Congress to I-35 even though technically, and according to street signs, East Sixth starts at Congress Avenue and runs east. But when you hear locals talk about East Sixth, we are referencing anything east of I-35. Don’t get confused by the street signs; you’ll be talking like a local in no time.

West Sixth is the section of Sixth Street that runs west from Congress Avenue. For the most part, the nightlife scene ends at North Lamar Boulevard, but for this article I’ll take us all the way to MoPac as there are several notable bars and restaurants in the extended stretch of West Sixth.

While you’ll find your fair share of bars here–no surprise for Sixth Street–West Sixth is much more diverse when it comes to local Austin businesses. This list highlights the cream of the crop. [Read more…]

Guide to Austin’s Dirty Sixth Street

Dirty Sixth Street Austin

Whether you love it or loath it, Sixth Street is one of the most iconic streets in Austin. It’s the epicenter of what made Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World.”

There are three sections of Sixth Street in Austin: West, East and what locals refer to as Dirty. West Sixth is the section of Sixth Street that runs west from Congress Avenue. For the most part, the nightlife scene ends at North Lamar Boulevard.

Technically, and according to street signs, East Sixth starts at Congress Avenue and runs east, but that’s not what you’ll hear from locals. We refer to the section of Sixth Street that stretches from Congress Avenue to I-35 as Dirty Sixth. Then East Sixth is anything east of I-35. Don’t get confused by the street signs; you’ll be talking like a local in no time.

There are actually quite a few wonderful businesses on Dirty Sixth that aren’t as “dirty” as you might imagine.

Waller Creek Pub House: Your Haven from Dirty 6th Madness

April 27, 2015 by Bill Tucker 1 Comment

Waller Creek Pub House Beer and Wall

Good food and great beer await you at Waller Creek Pub House

Picture this. You’re walking eastward on 6th Street in the midst of Friday night madness. People shouting drink specials. Pounding house music. The street is thick with UT kids and tourists. In desperation, you consider the 15 minute hike to East 6th for respite.

But imagine if there was a chilled out craft beer pub in the dark space between Red River and Route 35. A place with a relaxed vibe, quality beer and spirits and a yummy food menu.

Well, go ahead and open your eyes. Waller Creek Pub House, nestled on Sabine between 6th and 7th, will become your new favorite spot and a safe haven from the downtown hustle. [Read more…]

People Watching at SXSW 2012

March 13, 2012 by Dustin Vegas Leave a Comment

Forget meeting people at the SXSW parties. People watching is the best way to experience all the different personalities SXSW brings to Austin.

There was a soft, hungover buzz in the air when I began watching my fellow festival-goers today. The city stirred back to life after yet another night of company-sponsored parties and after parties. Crushed Monster and Red Bull cans lined the sidewalks like breadcrumbs back to Sixth Street. I watched bleary-eyed twenty-somethings in suits stagger from their hotel rooms and toward the Convention Center.

You can tell a lot about these people. Despite their partying, they have the self-determination to get themselves out of bed the next morning. These are the movers and shakers of my generation. They burn the candle from both ends. Interactive technology is a new and powerful market to capture, so only the smartest and most dedicated people can handle the lifestyle.

Sixth Street is eerily quiet as tourists wander zombie-like from their hotel rooms.

The quiet hum of the morning slowly grew into a roar as people flooded into the streets and toward their [Read more…]
