Guide to the Shortest Wait Times for the Best BBQ in Austin

Posted on August 6, 2015 by Edgar Barguiarena

Standing in Line Franklin Barbecue

The granddaddy of BBQ lines in Austin, at Franklin Barbecue (Credit: Wally Gobetz via Flickr CC)

There is nothing secret about Austin barbecue anymore. We’ve covered it extensively here at The Austinot, while state and national media outlets have also taken notice over the last couple of years. Barbecue has deep roots in the Central Texas area, contributing to Austin’s reputation as a growing tourist destination. So where does that leave us locals when we want to get our brisket fix?

Standing in line.

Franklin’s is the most notorious culprit, with 3-4 hour lines on a weekday not uncommon. But even a few of the other highly regarded barbecue trailers around town have you queuing up for hours at a time. Sure, there are other great barbecue joints around town that are open all day within the safe confines of an air conditioned building. But sometimes you get a hankering for a piece of greatness that can only come from the pit of a James Beard awarded pitmaster.

And for that, you have to wait. But maybe not as long if I have anything to do with it. With a little planning ahead of time and this handy guide, you can have some of the city’s best barbecue with minimal wait times. Keep reading for the best times to score some of the best barbecue in Austin, the Smoked Brisket Capital of the World. [Read more…]

Micklethwait Craft Meats: All the Taste, None of the Lines

Posted on November 18, 2014 by Edgar Barguiarena

Micklethwait Craft Meats Plate

All you need for season is salt and pepper–anything more and you’re cheating

It’s 11 a.m. in Austin, Texas and you can almost hear the collective sound of BBQ pits across the city creaking open. This is BBQ Rush Hour.

Most BBQ aficionados are still waiting in line, tempted by the aroma of smoked brisket and brontosaurus beef ribs. But if you’re at Micklethwait Craft Meats, there’s a good chance you walked right up to give your order.

Opened in 2012, Micklethwait Craft Meats is a BBQ trailer on E 11th Street about half a mile from the current BBQ gold standard, Franklin’s. I always get a kick out of watching people wait in line for hours as I make my way to Micklethwait. [Read more…]

Smokey Denmark’s Food Truck Launches Meat Revolution

Posted on September 25, 2014 by Jessica Pino

Smokey Denmark Food Truck

Smokey Denmark’s food truck

According to Bill Dumas, head pitmaster at Smokey Denmark’s, “Barbecue is the most bastardized word in the English language.” And it’s true. When most people hear the word barbecue, they imagine the Fourth of July with burgers, hotdogs and pool parties. But if you live in Texas, you know better – or at least you should.

You might not be totally familiar with the name Smokey Denmark’s, but I’m certain you’re familiar with their product. They’ve been smoking sausages and other meats since 1964. Their smoked sausages are served in several restaurants around town, such as Banger’s Sausage House on Rainey Street, where you can get Smokey Denmark’s andouille sausage.

After smoking meats for 50 plus years, they’ve decided to venture into the food truck world, taking their meats to the open road. Or in this case, right next to their meat shop at 3505 E 5th St. [Read more…]

La Barbecue Austin, TX

There is nothing short about this beef (Credit: Edgar Barguiarena)

There is a moment. A moment when you’re utterly certain you’re trying what could possibly be the best version of your favorite food group. A moment you take in as you stare down at a heaping brontosaurus beef rib sitting on a tray.

You know you couldn’t possibly balance the tray with one hand, for fear you might spill your prize, as everyone who has been standing in line for over an hour looks on.

La Barbecue has been smoking meat in Austin for over two years in two different locations. They are ready to [Read more…]

Savor the Past and Present at Freedmen’s Bar

Posted on February 3, 2014 by Matthew Champion

Freedmen's Bar Austin

Editor’s Note: Freedmen’s is closing Aug. 31, 2018, at its West Campus location.

These winter months provide an ideal opportunity to savor mouth-watering BBQ and enjoy a warming cocktail or two. Freedmen’s Bar over in West Campus allows you to do just that in a cozy atmosphere that has aged like a fine wine or a hard cheese – well. The bar sits in a historic landmark that was built by former slave George Franklin nearly 150 years ago. Over the years, the building has housed everything from a church to a grocery store.

When Cuatro’s owner Cuatro Kowalski saw the space, he envisioned a place where you could drink fine whiskey and eat smoked meat with both your friends and your ancestors. He renovated the building with some modern touches and imported an antique bar from Brownsville, all while maintaining the classic elegance and charm that a century and a half naturally provides. This guest blog post is by Cris Mueller.

Just thirty minutes southwest of Austin is our coy, neighboring hill country town of Driftwood that offers a posh day-trip, worthy to share.

Don’t be fooled by its peaceful nature. Rather, open your palette to experience a day chock full of infamous Texas cuisine and wineries on the Texas Wine Trail.

It’s the greatest time of year to pack up the car, take out your camera and venture off to Driftwood for wide open Texas skies, colorful wildflowers and foodie pics to make mouths water. Although there are many ways to wander the beautiful outdoors of Driftwood, I recommend you include two stops: a lunch of traditional Texas BBQ and a picturesque family vineyard. [Read more…]

True Hill Country BBQ at Burnet Feed Store BBQ

Posted on September 3, 2012 by Eric Highland

After visiting the amazing Reveille Peak Ranch just northwest of Burnet, we decided to stop in at Burnet Feed Store BBQ, a Texas Hill Country landmark since 1977. But this spot wasn’t always a BBQ Joint.

Burnet Feed Store BBQ Origins

Burnet Feed Store BBQ

In 1977, James and Drucilla Banner opened the Burnet Feed Store to provide for local ranchers in the Hill Country around Burnet. The Banners eventually sold the company, and though the business continued under new ownership, profits declined through most of 2000-2007. In December 2007, the place went up for sale. It was purchased by Lorenzo Romero and Rucker Ashmore. These two had the vision of turning Burnet Feed Store into a Hill Country BBQ restaurant, and that’s exactly what they did.

One of the largest restaurants in Burnet with seating for over 120, the Burnet Feed Store BBQ is now one of the busiest spots in Burnet on any given day. [Read more…]

Johnny T’s BBQ: Mouthwatering Texas Joint in Round Rock

Posted on June 13, 2012 by Eric Highland

I’m always looking for those great Texas BBQ spots anywhere close to Austin, and you know that when I’ve found one I’m going to share it. Those that have kept up with the Austinot also know that when we review a spot, we shoot straight from the hip.

Recently, Brittany and I were out and about just north of Austin in the Round Rock area. We were hungry after a long day of work, so we did a quick search on our phones and found that people were pretty happy with Johnny T’s BBQ. We decided to check it out for ourselves. [Read more…]

The Salt Lick Barbecue

Posted on January 23, 2012 by Brittany Highland

The-Salt-Lick-Eric-HighlandLooking for amazing barbecue food, Austin? Then let’s start with this question: Where is the best BBQ in Texas?

I love BBQ. Yes, love is a strong word, I know…but I could honestly eat good ol’ fashioned Texas BBQ three days a week and never tire of it.

I’m always looking for “the best of.” So I mentioned to one of my co-workers that I wanted to find the best BBQ restaurant in Texas. [Read more…]
