When it comes to filling food for the working crowd, the party crowd, and the foodies in Austin, very few places compare to Way South Philly.
Possibly the best Philly Cheesesteak in Austin has been discovered by the Austinot.
First let me just say that if you know of a better Philly Cheesesteak joint in Austin, I’d like to hear about it. Until you prove me wrong, I’m going to have to give the nod for best Philly Cheesesteak in Austin to Way South Philly.
Located in a food truck lot on East 6th and Waller, just east of I-35, is a little red food truck. This little red truck packs such an authentic Philly flavor, it will have you humming the Rocky theme and looking to ring the Liberty Bell.
What makes this little truck so unique? Well honestly the lengths that Willy and Rich have taken to bring you the authentic Philly Cheesesteak experience. Check this out…They start with imported Amoroso Rolls straight from Philadelphia, that’s right folks they import the rolls from Philly. They take the Amoroso roll and coat them in oil and toss them on the grill to give them a unique crispiness that is just oh so freaking good. They then sauté onions and caramelize them and chop up the steak really fine. Lavishly they spread the cheezwhiz from top to bottom on the roll. (If you want the authentic style.. cheezwhiz is how it is done; or you can opt for provolone if you like) Finally they put a massively generous portion of the steak and caramelized onions in the sandwich and there you have it. The original “Balboa” Philly Cheesesteak.
These sandwiches from Way South Philly are slap-yo-momma kind of good by the way.
They also have a pretty extensive variety of sandwiches too. They have 8 different sandwiches all with “Rocky” themed names. The “Paulie” which adds mushrooms, the “Apollo” which adds bell peppers and bleu cheese to the “Clubber Lang” which adds some zest and bite. I won’t spoil all the fun, you’ll just have to go check it out for yourself.
They even have a vegan option, in case that is your style. Yes vegans the guys from Way South Philly have love for you too.
Either way, take it from me, Austinot Eric, that if you love Philly Cheesesteaks, and you want the real deal, you can’t go wrong with Way South Philly. Give them a shot. I had one of their original Balboa’s and it was truly mindblowingly amazing.
Thanks to our subscriber David Lackey who told us about this. I appreciate the great tip!
P.S. Think you got what it takes to take on Way South Philly “Italian Stallion Challenge?” I don’t think that as of this writing anyone has successfully completed it yet. But that is for another post. I have to see one of these monster challenges take place before I write about it.

As someone who is from PA and worked at the Jersey Shore, this is the most authentic cheesesteak that I have found in Texas! I’ll be hanging out there for the last 4 days of South by Southwest. Stop by and visit
