7 of the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies in Austin

November 9, 2020 by Reena Weaver 1 Comment

Austin's best chocolate chip cookies
Some of the best Chocolate Chip Cookies in Austin

A really good chocolate chip cookie just can’t be beat. I would even argue that they are the best dessert of all time! Chocolate chip cookies are classic and comforting, but the coolest part is that they can be made so many ways. Whether you like chewy, bakery-style cookies or giant, thick cookies or crispy and flat cookies, there’s definitely a perfect chocolate chip cookie for you in Austin.

I’ve always been quite the cookie monster. I mean, cookies are just the best! But about a year ago, I took my cookie obsession to the next level and began my quest of making the perfect chocolate chip cookie. I tried dozens of recipes, experimented with my own, and learned quite a lot about baking science. I experimented with dark vs. milk chocolate, frozen vs. chilled dough, cold vs. melted butter, and so on. I got so good at baking (and eating) cookies that my husband and I seriously considered starting an at-home bakery/cookie delivery service! Perhaps it is still something I will pursue one day; for now, I will continue enjoying the incredible cookie creations of others.

I never did perfect my own chocolate chip cookie recipe, and it’s honestly because I like chocolate chip cookies made in many different ways. Sometimes I’m in the mood for a bite-sized cookie snack and sometimes I want a giant, decadent cookie that pretty much replaces a meal! (#cookiesforbreakfast, am I right!?) The different styles of chocolate chip cookies are all so wonderful. That being said, I know a good chocolate chip cookie when I try one! I have sampled many chocolate chip cookies all over our city and narrowed it down to a list of my favorites. Let me know what you think!

Thank you to every business featured in this article for generously allowing me to try their cookies at no charge. All opinions are my own. Cookies are ordered alphabetically and are not ranked in any way.

1/ Bang Bang Cookie Co.

Bang Bang Cookie Co. is a home bakery producing giant chocolate chip cookies with the perfect consistency. These cookies are beautifully aesthetic, have a wonderful balance of chewy in the middle and crispy on the edges, and are not overly sweet. The generous sprinkle of sea salt on top really brings this cookie together. Plus, a percentage of sales go to the Austin Justice Coalition. Truly a win-win!

Where to purchase: Website.

2/ The Bearded Baking Company

The Bearded Baking Company’s chocolate chip cookies are incredible. They are thick and chewy cookies with gooey chocolate chips sprinkled consistently throughout. The cookies have a combination of dark and semisweet chocolate chips for an amazing flavor medley. It is truly a perfected recipe! They are great right out of the oven and just as amazing when reheated! The Bearded Baking Company sells many other amazing baked goods as well, but you have got to try these cookies. As Wes, the owner of the company says, “Remember, life is sweeter with crumbs in your beard!”

Where to purchase: Website or at Pedernales Farmers Market.

3/ Cookie Wookie Kitchen

Cookie Wookie Kitchen is a home bakery making cookies with a twist. These thin, unique cookies are rich in flavor and have a wonderful crispy to chewy ratio. Cookie Wookie Kitchen ages their dough for 1 to 3 days to allow the flavors to truly absorb, and it results in a seriously scrumptious cookie! They source locally for many of the ingredients in their cookies, so you are supporting multiple local businesses with each purchase!

Where to purchase: Website.

4/ Dough Re Mi

Dough Re Mi is a home bakery started by two teenage friends, Sarah and Alice, in May of this year. They used their entrepreneurial spirit and talented baking skills to make a difference in the community. Dough Re Mi’s cookies are bite sized and have a great chocolate chip to cookie ratio. Their cookies are delicious and chewy, and reminiscent of the perfect snackable cookies I used to dunk in milk during childhood. They have a rotating flavor schedule each month, but always have their classic chocolate chip cookies on the menu for you to try. Best of all, 80% of their proceeds go to local Austin non-profits, so your purchase supports teen entrepreneurs, the community, and your sweet tooth all in one!

Where to purchase: Website.

5/ Teddy V. Pâtisserie

Teddy V. Pâtisserie is an Austin fan favorite, and for good reason! Their cookies are giant, thick, 1/3 pound chocolate chip cookies bursting with chocolate chips and flavor! Teddy V.’s cookies are perfectly Instagrammable, and many fans break their cookies in half, revealing the gooey, delicious cookie inside. You can even purchase them with or without walnuts. Teddy V.’s cookies are incredible when eaten immediately, frozen, or reheated! Take your pick on how to eat them and where to get them, but a Teddy V’s cookie is always amazing!

Where to purchase: Website, at Texas Farmers Market, or at Saten Coffee.

6/ ThoroughBread

The incredible, giant cookies from Thoroughbread

ThoroughBread bakery is an adorable, quaint bakery in the Zilker neighborhood of Austin carrying amazing breads, their signature “burridoughs,” and best of all, giant cookies! They have other awesome flavors, but the chocolate chip was, of course, my go-to. ThoroughBread’s cookies are very unique. They are large, flavorful cookies with a bread-like texture, chock-full of chocolate chips! They are thick and hearty and truly are a delightful breakfast on a cloudy morning! I thoroughly enjoyed ThoroughBread’s cookies and will definitely be back for more!

Where to purchase: Website or at 1709 Bluebonnet Lane Austin, TX 78704.

7/ TruLea Cookies

TruLea Cookies is a home bakery making delectable, all-natural cookies made by a true cookie artist, Lea. Lea used her culinary school experience and love of baking for her family and friends to perfect a truly great cookie. TruLea Cookies have the perfect mix of chewy in the center with crispy edges, and decadent chocolate chips sprinkled throughout. The balance of chewy, crispy, and delicious chocolate is mastered in these cookies in a way I have never tasted before! They are truly wonderful cookies and a must-try for any cookie lover!

Where to purchase: Website.
