Sometimes I imagine myself riding a motorcycle through Texas Hill Country in an Easy Rider-esque montage. Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild” plays as the camera slowly pans past my rotating front tire. Longhorns stop grazing, mouths agape, to watch me roar past bluebonnet fields and over rolling hills. Austin shrinks in my mirrors as I ride west to discover myself, and America along the way.
I am as free as a bird, and this bird you cannot change.
But then the film goes off the reel as I’m snapped awake to bumper-to-bumper I-35 traffic. I taste gasoline fumes, hear a cacophony of horns, and see the frustration of tech workers stuck heading downtown. There is no guitar-filled Americana here.
Luckily for us city folk, Lone Star Moto Rentals exists to help us channel our inner road warrior. Lone Star is an Austin-only shop that rents motorcycles five days a week (including weekends). The idea is simple. Anybody with a valid motorcycle license can visit them and choose one of their motorcycles to ride for the day.
Wide Selection from Motorcycle Fanatics
Lone Star has over fifteen different models of motorcycles, so there’s any type of bike for any type of riding. You could go with the Honda CB300 R if you’re interested in a fast and furious type of ride. Or, if you’re like me, the sleek and classic look of the Harley Davidson Nightster might be more up your alley. I want my motorcycle to look like something Bruce Wayne would ride.
The guys behind the counter at this shop seem to be in love with motorcycles. “It’s fascinating how quickly the technology progresses,” one told me. “The types of bike you would be riding today are nothing like the bikes you’d be into ten years ago.”
This endless fascination with motorcycles is at the heart of the business. To me, the company seems like an excuse for a couple of motorcycle fanatics to work with an endless cycle of new bikes. Their obsession is our gain. One stop into Lone Star and you’ll walk away knowing more than you ever expected to learn about bikes.
Doorway to Texas Hill Country
Personally, I think the coolest part about the Lone Star team is how willing they are to sit with you and plan your entire ride. Texas Hill Country is home to some of the most beautiful routes you could imagine. I know because I was guided through the many pre-made rides Lone Star suggests to customers. Riding in the congested city isn’t riding at all, so you’ll be encouraged to get out into the rolling fields to breath the sweet Hill Country air.
And, yes, the shop is open on weekends for anybody who wants to try the weekend warrior life on for size. Just take the classes, pass the test and get a little motorcycle experience under your belt before you visit. Those are the only things stopping you.
Lone Star Moto Rentals is located in South Austin at 5214 Burleson Road Suite 101. Pull off of Ben White Boulevard and you’ll see a small selection of their fleet parked out front. Follow their Facebook page for updates.
