Best Disc Golf Austin Courses for Every Skill Level

Zilker Park Disc Golf Course

If you’re new to disc golf in Austin, Zilker is probably the place to start. John Houck originally designed it as a temporary course for the 1984 Texas State Overall Championships, then spent three years convincing the parks department to keep it. Not a bad call.

Houck would eventually design more than 180 courses and earn a spot in the PDGA Hall of Fame, but Zilker was his first.

The 18-hole, par-54 layout is friendly without feeling like a throwaway round. Fourteen holes are under 300 feet, and nothing stretches beyond 400, so you won’t need a cannon for most of the course.

The front nine is especially approachable, while the back nine gives you a little more room to work. For newer players, it’s a chance to learn without getting beaten up by the course. For experienced players, the challenge comes from throwing cleanly rather than simply throwing far.

Hole 10 is where Zilker stops being quite so polite. At roughly 400 feet, it’s the longest hole on the course, and its low ceiling means a high throw can get shut down before it has a chance.

You can finish a round in under two hours, leaving plenty of time to hit Barton Springs Pool afterward. Just don’t sleep in on a weekend. Zilker gets busy fast, so aim to arrive before 10 AM.

Mary Moore Searight Disc Golf Course

Hole 15 at Mary Moore Searight will make you hesitate for a second before throwing. You’re standing at the top of a hill, looking down toward the basket with several possible lines and a view that makes South Austin feel surprisingly far away.

That hole is a good preview of what makes Searight so much fun. The 18-hole, par-56 course doesn’t rely on huge distances to make things difficult. Instead, it sends you through narrow fairways lined with dense Ashe juniper.

At 5,157 feet, your mid-range discs will also get plenty of work while your biggest driver may spend most of the round sulking in your bag.

The back nine also turns up the difficulty, with rock formations, elevation changes, and long shots under low ceilings. The fairways get tighter, the lines get stranger, and the cedars get increasingly interested in collecting your discs.

And if you lose a disc in the junipers or need to try something different, you don’t have to go far. Disc Nation, one of Austin’s major disc golf retailers, is just outside the park entrance.

Legendary Public Park Courses & Iconic Layouts

Roy G. Guerrero Disc Golf Course

If you only have time for one free round of disc golf in Austin, make some room for Roy G. Guerrero.

The 2023 redesign by Mike Olse, the same designer who created the original course, gave this already-popular layout an upgrade. On 15 of 18 holes, the longer tees are in completely different spots, which means the hole itself can play differently depending on where you tee off.

From the long tees, you’re looking at nearly 9,600 feet through the woods, with everything from long open throws to tight tunnel shots and a couple of holes that start wandering into par-5 territory.

From the short tees, things are much friendlier. The fairways have been cleaned up, the lines are fair, and you can actually learn the course without spending half your round digging your disc out of the underbrush.

One last thing: don’t let your GPS send you on a scenic tour of Austin before your round. The correct parking lot is at the end of Grove Blvd, not off S. Pleasant Valley Road. Get that part right, and you’re good to go.

Circle C Ranch Disc Golf Course

Circle C is for the days when you look at a disc golf course and think, “Sure, I could make this harder on myself.” The course has 21 holes and is a par-64 layout stretching up to nearly 8,000 feet, with both par 4s and par 5s, something you won’t find on any other free public course in Austin.

And those longer holes aren’t just there to make the scorecard look scary. Your drive matters. A lot. Miss your landing spot by 20 feet and you may be spending your next shot punching out of the trees instead of attacking the basket.

Most holes also have trees running along both sides of the fairway, so even when there isn’t any OB, the course has plenty of ways to make you pay for a bad line.

Holes 7 through 10 are where things get particularly spicy. The terrain turns rocky and hilly, with exposed roots, uneven footing, and tighter lines. So, wear trail runners at the very least. Hiking shoes would be even better.

MetCenter Disc Golf Course

There’s OB on every hole here, with creeks, ponds, parking lots, fences, and tall grass all waiting to turn a slightly bad throw into a much more expensive one. The open sections also catch plenty of wind, so a drive that looked perfectly fine when it left your hand can suddenly decide it has somewhere else to be.

The course is no slouch on distance, either. From the back tees, it stretches nearly 9,800 feet at par 67, making it one of the longest free public layouts around Austin.

The front nine is especially open and long, giving you plenty of space to throw. Hole 10 is the monster par 5, followed by several more 500-plus-foot holes from the blue tees.

The back nine tightens up, and hole 18 gives you a minor dilemma. Take the left route, and you can save serious distance, but you’re flirting with the OB creek. Play right, and you’re safer, but you’re giving up your shot at birdie.

Give yourself at least two and a half hours, especially if the wind is blowing. And bring discs you trust in changing conditions and be willing to adjust your angles instead of stubbornly throwing the same shot and blaming the wind afterward.

Destination Brewery & Championship Disc Golf Austin Venues

Sprinkle Valley Disc Golf Course at Austin Beerworks

Olse, the designer behind Roy G. Guerrero, built this 18-hole championship layout on the brewery’s Sprinkle Valley campus, and the long tees are rated at a 1,000-level round. In other words, if you’re playing from the back, nobody is going to accuse you of coming here for an easy afternoon.

The course covers nearly 2.9 miles and gives you a little bit of everything: creek crossings with bridges, elevation changes, tight wooded lines, and OB that keeps wandering throws honest.

Hole 10, in particular, will make you trade power for precision with a tight 290-foot downhill shot through the trees. Meanwhile, holes 7, 9, and 11 will give you multiple ways to attack the basket.

Then there’s hole 18, which seems determined to make sure you don’t coast through the finish. You have to clear OB, thread a gap in the trees, then climb uphill to a basket sitting on a plateau. It’s a proper final hole, the kind where you finish throwing and immediately need to know what everyone else scored.

And yes, there’s a Mint Discs store right on the property. If you need a replacement or want to try a new mold, you can do that before or after your round.

Live Oak Brewing Disc Golf Course

The head brewer designed this 18-hole layout across 22 acres along the Colorado River, and it has enough variety to hold its own even if you completely ignore the beer part.

You’ve got open fairways, wooded corridors, and some mild elevation on holes 11 and 12, with the airport sitting across the highway as a very Austin backdrop.

The rough is where things get interesting. Native wildflowers and tall grasses have been left in place to create actual habitat for birds, armadillos, and other local wildlife.

That’s lovely for the ecosystem and slightly less lovely when your disc disappears into it. Miss the fairway, and you’re going on a small nature expedition. Long socks are a very good idea, especially around the thorny edges and occasional poison ivy.

Then there are the obstacles, of course. Old brewing kegs and tanks have been worked into the layout as mandatories and hazards. One basket is even sitting right on top of a stack of beer kegs.

Even better, the permanent basket lights mean you can play glow golf after dark without waiting for a special event.

The taproom shop also carries brewery-stamped discs and limited barrel-aged discs from Mint and other manufacturers, so your post-round browsing can get dangerous for your wallet.

The course is free for taproom patrons, with the expectation that you grab a beer or something from the shop while you’re there.
