With everything going on in the world right now, we could all use a bit of good news. Here it is: there’s a new beer coming! And while this typically generates a little excitement, this isn’t your average beer release. It is far more than that. It’s an initiative, it’s a movement, and it’s a cause. Enter Black Is Beautiful.
As Austin’s restaurants scramble to adapt to the new reality we’re all living in, they must sell food or risk going out of business. We’re grieving the permanent closures of Shady Grove, Threadgill’s, NXNW, and Magnolia Cafe on Lake Austin Boulevard. We don’t want to see anyone else leave us.
And while we know you don’t need fancy enticements to support your favorite local businesses, we don’t want to waste this opportunity to share breaking news from restaurants around the city. Get excited, and then go place an order.
We could all use a little comfort right about now, eh? We’re stuck indoors, teaching kids, missing milestones, trying to stay healthy, and getting used to that Zoom life. If there’s one thing that can ease the stress, then it’s local comfort food from our favorite restaurants in Austin.

Here in Austin, we’ve all been impacted by COVID-19 in different ways. Some of have lost all of our income, or enough that it keeps us up at night.
Some of us are agitated during the stay-at-home, lonely by ourselves or overwhelmed with having the family together all of the time.
Some of us are on the front lines, essential workers who allow the rest of us to receive medical care–or eat.
And some of us are sick. Some of us have lost our lives to this virus. And some of us are hurting in isolation as people we love suffer.
Here at The Austinot, our volunteer team has been impacted. A number of us have lost our jobs. Our advertising revenue, which keeps the lights on, has been impacted. No one is searching for “guide to east austin” right now. (We don’t blame you.)
There’s no way around it: this is a challenging, dark time, and part of coping is acknowledging that truth. But we don’t need to stay there.

Like many around the world, I’m making a mental list of businesses that value profits over people. Make the list and you loose my patronage. Simple as that.
But businesses are in a tough spot. Lay off employees so they can stay afloat, or continue to pay and everyone goes down with the ship? It’s a literal no-win situation.

With all of this newfound time on most of our hands, you may be doing all the right things like catching up on housecleaning, reading that book you’ve been meaning to get to, or simply plowing through your watch list. However you’re spending your time, you certainly shouldn’t have to face this situation without a local beer in hand. Who ever heard of a shut-in without beer? Pssshh. Not a chance!
In all seriousness, Austin breweries and brewpubs are among the hardest hit businesses amid this crisis. BUT KNOW THIS: NEARLY ALL OF THEM ARE OPEN FOR BEER TO-GO! If they serve their own food or have a food truck, then they’re almost certainly offering take-out food, as well.
These are the people who take care of us in good times, and we really need to take care of them during this not-so-good time. We want them all to be open once we Austinites get back to being our social selves.

Editor’s note: We live in uncertain times, with multiple travel warnings and bans in place. For those who still choose to fly, we hope you exercise every precaution to stay healthy. And for those who need to eat at the airport, these local eateries could all use our support.
For the average traveler, airports aren’t normally associated with fun. Flying can mean early mornings, late nights, waiting, and stressful hours spent packing. Although these realities are sometimes unavoidable, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has done an amazing job of creating a more relaxed and, dare I say, even fun environment for waiting passengers. It has become a reflection of Austin itself, brimming with live music and art. In a way, it is its own hub of culture and creativity.
Another huge way the airport creates a fun environment for guests is by filling the corridors with local Austin eateries we know and love. Everywhere you turn, you can find an Austin neighborhood classic. Look out for any of the following next time you fly.

When I walked into Central Machine Works, the first word to leave my mouth after picking up my dropped jaw was, “Whoa!” The sheer size of the place, along with the hustle and bustle, compels you to see what all the buzz is about. Turns out it’s quite a lot!

There are three sections of Sixth Street in Austin: West, East, and what locals refer to as Dirty. West Sixth is the section of Sixth Street that runs west from Congress Avenue. For the most part, the nightlife scene ends at North Lamar Boulevard.
For locals, Dirty Sixth runs from Congress to I-35 even though technically, and according to street signs, East Sixth Street starts at Congress Avenue and runs east. But when you hear locals talk about East Sixth, we are referencing anything east of I-35. Don’t get confused by the street signs; you’ll be talking like a local in no time.
East Sixth as we know and love it today is an eclectic blend of shops, restaurants, dives, and cocktail bars. It’s also quite new–in relation to Dirty or West Sixth–with the gentrification of east Austin surging in the past 10 years.
