As I begin to celebrate my fifth year in Austin, I’m realizing many things about my life here and the spaces I choose to live it in. One piece of this Austin-based life I’ve mastered is finding the most satisfying places to test out my humor, palate and taste in men…and the venues they choose for our dates.

I have a string of top notch date spots to share, as I bare my soul to Austinot readers. Today, I’ll begin by presenting a few of my most memorable, cozy coffee date spots in Austin. [Read more…]

Cenote Austin

Cenote is located at 1010 E. Cesar Chavez in Austin

This guest blog article is by Madison Torres.

How is one of the newest coffee shops in Austin already one of the best? Austinite owners, Cody Symington and Mary Jenkins, are doing more than just a few things right.

From firsthand experience and an interview with one of the owners, I have the delight of sharing with you a few of the reasons why Cenote (seh-noh-tay) is one place you don’t want to pass up. [Read more…]

Austin Coffee Shop Hunt: What Makes A Coffee Shop Great?

May 16, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 10 Comments

According to those of you who read my last blog entry about Epoch Coffee, every coffee shop should be treated individually, according to its own strengths and weaknesses.

So I come to you with a question:

What makes a coffee shop great?

A popular and intelligent coffee blog called Coffee Cup News uses the following criteria to rank the quality of a coffee shop. I’d like to run the list by any coffee gurus who read this blog regularly and get your thoughts. Here is this list with my thoughts on each topic. What do you [Read more…]

Austin Coffee Shop Hunt #1: Epoch Coffee

May 14, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 32 Comments

Epoch Coffee in Austin TexasWhen it comes to living in Austin, coffee shops are a way of life. Austin is filled with different kinds of people, yet here you can find coffee shops that accommodate even our weirdest denizens.

Got a friend who loves martial arts? Send ’em to Kick Butt Coffee. Looking to impress a fine young lady on your first date? Maybe Mozart’s is the place for you. And if you’re looking to change the world, well, Dominican Joe is the place to go. They are ridiculously passionate about their support of non-profits in the Dominican Republic. What I’m getting at is simple: coffee is more than a drink in Austin. It is an expression of our individual identities and values.

So now I am on a mission to find Austin’s most unique [Read more…]

Austin Java on Barton SpringsEditor’s Note: Austin Java is closing its Barton Springs location on July 1, 2018, due to rising property taxes. A new location will open at 5404 Manchaca Road.

Running an Austin blog, I have one of the greatest jobs in the world. Every day I get to explore Austin, meet fascinating people, and write about a city that I love to discover.

Most days, I’m out and about and normally have a long list of people who I’m meeting with. More often than not, my meetings are one right after the other. Because of this routine, I’m frequently looking for great local spots to work from for the day.

Enter Austin Java on Barton Springs.

I don’t know about you, but in order for me to plant myself for a few hours and get down to interviews and writing, I have certain things that I’m looking for when it comes to establishments. [Read more…]

Fair Trade Austin Coffee for Education at Dominican Joe

April 2, 2012 by Brittany Highland 6 Comments

Dominican Joe Coffee Shop Austin TexasEditor’s Note: Dominican Joe closed at the end of April 2017.

For a vast percentage of the Austin population, coffee is at least as important to life as water. Like water, the potability of coffee differs drastically.

The goal of many a college student and working professional is to find an Austin coffee shop with:

A) Good coffee.

B) Electrical outlets en masse.

C) Music playing over the speakers that isn’t so loud that you can’t hear yourself think, or so obnoxious that you feel like stabbing yourself in the eye with a spoon.

Not necessarily in that order.

For many people, the factors that go into choosing a favorite coffee shop end there. And that’s okay. But others take coffee to a deeper level. They begin to question where their coffee is coming from – who it is hurting, who it is helping. If you are one of those people, you’ll want to learn more about Dominican Joe Coffee Shop. Kick Butt Coffee Closed In Triangle; Still Kickin On Airport

March 26, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 16 Comments

In the words of Douglas Adams: “Don’t panic.” Kick Butt Coffee is not closed for good. It just left The Triangle and went back to its roots.

Kick Butt Coffee’s empty space in The Triangle stands out like a missing tooth. The coffee shop’s here-today-gone-tomorrow departure has left a lot of people scratching their heads: “Is the business gone forever?”

Thankfully, the answer is no. Kick Butt Coffee’s Triangle location is gone, due to unfortunate financial circumstances. However, their Airport Blvd. location remains all the more kickin’.

I first wandered into the doors of Kick Butt Coffee on Airport almost three years ago. I was in the throes of a hard night’s [Read more…]
