Cinco de Mayo Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cinco de Mayo and why is it celebrated?
According to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration that takes place on May 5th. The victory of the Mexican Army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza, is honored on this day.
What are some of the Cinco de Mayo activities?
Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican celebration that is celebrated mostly in the state of Puebla, where Zaragoza’s unlikely victory occurred, although it is also honored in other nations across the world. Military parades, reenactments of the Battle of Puebla, and other festive celebrations are among the traditions observed throughout the festival. All kinds of activities are planned as part of the festivities, including parades, food, music, traditional dancing, and military reenactments.
When did the United States’ Cinco de Mayo celebrations begin?
Cultivated by the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture in response to opposition to French power in Mexico, the contemporary American celebration of Cinco de Mayo dates back to 1863 in California, according to the Center. Mexican miners were so ecstatic that they spontaneously fired rifle rounds and fireworks, sang patriotic songs, and delivered impromptu speeches in the gold-mining town of Columbia (now Columbia State Park).” (#31)
When it first began to gain momentum throughout the United States, in the 1950s and 1960s, it was not generally observed until the 1980s. This was when marketers, notably beer companies, capitalized on the day’s celebratory nature and began to publicize it. Formed in areas with large Mexican-American populations, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and New York, it quickly gained popularity and expanded into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage throughout the country.
