Every time I step out of my house to grab supplies, it’s still jarring to see everyone in face masks. As the world starts to reopen, it is clear that these protective accessories won’t be going away anytime soon.
Like everyone, our local fashion and art community has been hit hard by the ongoing COVID-19 situation. But they’re still working as hard as ever as they pivot to create face masks to protect Austinites. As you look for your own masks to purchase, consider supporting some of these local businesses.
Note: These are all non-medical grade masks and are not a replacement for the N95 masks.
1/ Bruce & Olive
Bruce & Olive typically offers stylish, lightweight basics that are fit to get you through the hot Texas summers while being environmentally friendly. They are now offering comfortable face masks to customers with metallic-gold inlay that read “Be bold. Give light.” They truly are giving light by donating one mask to a local organization for every mask purchased. At the date of publication, they’ve donated over 400 masks!
Cost: $8.00
Style: Ear loop
Where to Purchase: Bruce & Olive
2/ Chiva Pets Closet
As the name would suggest, this company offers cute accessories for your favorite furry friends. However, Chiva Pets Closet has joined other local designers to make face masks for customers to buy. You can choose between ear loops or fabric ties based on your preference.
Cost: $13.00

3/ B.T.R. Design Studio

If you’ve attended any shows by Ballet Austin or Austin Shakespeare, you may have seen some of their work. Due to the current situation, they have switched up operations to make face masks. You can purchase both kids and adult-sized masks in a variety of fun patterns (my favorite is Neapolitan Dynamite!).

One Art Por Favor is a local artist who sells the cutest plywood and acrylic earrings. They are also selling the ultimate face mask kit, which includes a mask, pouch, and a miracle ear saver. She has a variety of fun patterns, including Disney and Harry Potter masks!
And hey, if you need a quarantine activity to try, you might want to grab the Nightmare Acrylic Puzzle when you get a mask.

Where to Purchase: Lys Santamaria
6/ Mozart’s Coffee
At the start of 2020, nobody would have thought you’d need a “Keep Austin Weird” face mask, but you might want to grab one now before they sell out. Mozart’s Coffee is selling this face mask along with a ton of other adult and kid-sized nurse-made masks. They also have Designer face masks, Cotton Coffee Filter Insert masks, and SportsFlex masks for those who stay active.
Cost: $9.99 – $25.00

7/ Brittany Allen

Local jewelry designer Kendra Scott has also joined the ranks of businesses offering fun and fashionable face masks. Kendra Scott is donating one mask to a frontline worker for every mask sold.
Cost: $15.00 – $22.00

9/ The Salomé Masks
Face masks, but make it fashion. The Salomé Masks is offering beautiful masks that are part lace veil and part 3-ply protective masks. Due to the inspiration that came from a style worn by Muslim women for centuries, this business is donating 10% of profits to Islamic Relief USA.

10/ Sock Club
As the name would suggest, Sock Club sells a variety of quality cotton socks that are designed in Austin – and made in America. They are currently offering large quantity orders of custom face masks made from the same softest Combed Cotton used in their socks. It’s perfect for businesses looking to order logo’d masks for employees to use!

Flavors is a local business that offers fun, Austin-inspired sustainable clothing and accessories. They’re currently offering several styles of face masks in Small and Regular sizes – and I definitely recommend checking out the Fleece face masks!

The Mozart’s masks aren’t handmade or local. Why are they part of this listicle? They’re made in Lithuania. There’s a logo right on the mask. https://tngmask.eu/index.php?route=common/home
