Bronko Box: Eco-Friendly Austin Startup Makes Moving Easy

How many people move to the Austin area every day? It depends on who you ask, but most say its just over a hundred.

More importantly to your every day Austinite, however, how many people are moving within Austin on any given day? That number is not as easy to pinpoint, but it’s a pain that anyone with a truck and a few friends knows all too well. With apartment occupancy rates in Austin hovering around the 99% mark, and rental prices continuing to go up, we obviously like to move around.

Bronko Boxes Stacked Up

You can even use the Bronkos as make-shift clothes racks!

While moving is a pain no matter how you look at it, local company Bronko Box is doing their part to make the process easier and more eco-friendly. Forget the standard cardboard boxes you have to round up and assemble before your move. They can be expensive to buy and typically only serve one use, becoming clutter to throw out after your move.

Instead, Bronko Box delivers durable plastic boxes that come assembled and ready. The boxes have easy-grip handles and can easily be stacked 4-5 high to be effortlessly moved with the included wheel attachment. Once you’re unpacked and settled in, Bronko Box arranges a time to come by and pick up your boxes. It’s that easy.

Disrupting the Packing Experience

Owners Brooke and Bo Cox got the idea for Bronko Box during their last move, after noticing there was no residential equivalent to the heavy-duty polyethylene plastic boxes used in commercial moving. According to Bo, cardboard boxes get 2.5 uses on average before ending up in a landfill. Bronko Boxes, using a conservative estimate, typically see over 400 uses. Cost-wise, you as a consumer can see savings of up to 50% compared to purchasing new cardboard boxes and packing tape.

Bronko Boxes Stacked Up at Delivery

Four large Bronkos stacked on an XL box come ready for packing time

  • The company’s large box — 27 inches by 17.75 inches by 12.5 inches – rents for $1.75 a week and goes up to $3.50 for three weeks.
  • The next size up goes for $2.50 for one week and up to $5 for three weeks.
  • The moving wheels (don’t leave your old home without them) start at $5 for one week and go up to $10 for three weeks.
  • Bronko Box also offers ready-to-go packages with a preset amount of boxes provided, given the amount of rooms you plan to move.
Bronko Boxes Stacked Together

Five packed boxes can be easily transported with the moving wheels

The entire experience is driven by a slick web interface that moves you from ordering to check out within a matter of minutes. The site provides a real-time calendar that allows for deliveries within a 2-hour window as early as the following day. You’re even given the option of purchasing packing paper or bubble wrap as you check out, to cover all your packing needs.

Most people rent the boxes for 1-2 weeks, but it’s easy to extend if you need more time to unpack. It’s also much easier to deal with re-stacking the Bronko Boxes at the end of a move than breaking down a house full of cardboard boxes that will inevitably occupy space until another move, or end up in a landfill.

Boasting a stellar 5 stars out of 5 stars on Yelp with almost 40 reviews is no easy feat, but Bronko Box has earned it with an outstanding customer experience and by genuinely easing the hassle of moving. It’s Austin ingenuity at its finest, convenient and eco-friendly.

How often have you moved since first arriving in Austin?

Disclosure: I moved within Austin recently with complimentary Bronko Boxes, provided for the purposes of this review. All opinions are my own.

This is such a great idea that I can’t believe it hasn’t been thought of before! I love that it is eco-friendly and will definitely be recommending it to friends who are moving in the future!
