Want to channel your inner Argentinian? Buenos Aires Café is here to make it easy! Besides dancing the tango and tossing back some Malbec, the make-at-home empanada kit from Buenos Aires Café is a fun way to show off your South American style.
Their take-home Amaro tastings and date night kits from their Milonga Room speakeasy are also excellent ways to do so for drinkers with a sophisticated or adventurous palate. Another way to celebrate Argentinian flair is to enjoy an upcoming cooking class with Chef Reina Morris and Paola Guerrero-Smith. Or you can try a date night with Guerrero-Smith and her husband.
Disclosure: Buenos Aires Café delivered an empanada kit with pre-made sangria for me to try out, and this is my honest experience.
Make Authentic Argentinian Empanadas
Buenos Aires is one of my favorite Austin restaurants, and I have been paying close attention to how they are handling this time of turmoil. One smart move owners Chef Reina and Paola made was to offer take-home cooking kits for their famous empanadas.
They invited me to try one of these empanada kits, and I had so much fun. I also shared with my neighbors, who loved them, too! The make-at-home empanadas were easy to make and came out so delicious, plus the portions were quite generous.
The take home empanada kit came with a take-home sangria (your choice of white or red). Like always with Buenos Aires Café, the personalization and attention to detail were fantastic. The kit included a handwritten note and printed step-by-step instructions.
Their empanadas are one of their most famous and popular dishes. Now you can have fun making these tasty empanadas right in the comfort and safety of your own kitchen. While empanadas can be challenging to make from scratch, as is anything with homemade dough that needs to be rolled out and cut to shape, Buenos Aires makes this one as easy as possible.
Get Your Hands Dirty
You have the pleasure of getting your hands dirty and are involved in the actual cooking, yet the more tedious or time-consuming details are taken care of for you.
This is the perfect idea for busy people who love to cook. They have made it simple for the at-home would-be chefs. It would also be great for a date night or family fun in the kitchen! The Buenos Aires team has made, kneaded, rolled out, measured, and cut the empanada dough into perfect empanada-sized circles.
The Buenos Aires team has also already cooked and mixed the empanada filling to make it even easier. Customers choose from one of five types of filling: chicken, spicy ground beef, mild ground beef, vegetable, or tuna.
I had so much fun stuffing the empanadas. I was careful not to get them too full, though, as I tend to do so. When making your own, remember to pinch the empanadas closed to form a tight seal. You don’t want everything to leak out in a gooey mess, after all. Try to twist the edges as you seal them, to make them look really cool. The most important thing is to seal them completely.
The instructions told me to place them on a cookie sheet, then brush them with a light egg wash. Space them an inch or so apart, to give the dough enough space to expand when cooked. That way you get individual empanadas that are as pretty as they are yummy.
On October 15, join the Buenos Aires team and members of the public EDTG (Eat-Drink-To-Go) Facebook page to make empanadas together with others as part of a group. Or pick up the kit to make them independently.
While the dining rooms at each location are currently partially reopened, Buenos Aires is expanding their take-home experiences, adding virtual classes with the chefs and Amaro flights and virtual date nights with the Milonga Room team. Keep an eye on their page for more take-home fun!
