Happy Thursday, everybody! Though this is an Austin blog, I am coming at you straight from Northern California this week! This is some serious hill country up here. I feel right at home. Despite the topography, Austin will always have one thing over California: live music. Forget the hills.

Today’s Austin music podcast is devoted to the PJ’s. This band is something out of left field, podcastically speaking. The Austinot Music Podcast has been knee-deep in Americana lately, and the PJ’s are right at home in this trend. The PJ’s, however, are Americana with a twist. They infuse blues and rock with wit and humor. Their songs twist the mundane and every day into witty insights regarding 21st Century life.

The PJ’s began when their vocalist Phil decided to leave the Downtown comedy club Esther’s Follies. Apparently he wanted to use his creative mind in other ways, so he began writing songs. Eventually his stack o’ songs grew large and Phil decided to put them to music. Thus, the PJ’s were born. The band has been playing in venues across Austin, convincing people along the way that not all humor has to be brainless. The PJ’s take their music and humor very seriously. Winston Churchill said it best, “A joke is a very serious thing.”
