Since at least the 1960s, Hyde Park has been considered Austin’s hip and cool neighborhood.
Lately, whenever I plan a Friday night, consider my options, and notice what’s going on in Hyde Park, I start to wonder why it’s not considered the Arts District. Being just north of “the Drag,” this neighborhood houses many wine bars and art galleries. Among one of those galleries is the really cool Gallery Black Lagoon.
For those who remember The Movie Store, that space has since been purchased by Gallery Black Lagoon owners Singer Mayberry and her husband, David Lujan. After almost four years of growth, the gallery offers yoga classes, monthly gallery opening shows, and even services for artists featured in shows.
Gallery Openings
Almost every month, Gallery Black Lagoon hosts a new gallery opening. These events – typically held on a Friday – are a lot of fun, especially when you’re looking for a date night idea or want to socialize with other people who appreciate art.
Each show exhibits work from two or more artists. Typically the art being displayed is flat art, ranging from paintings to photographs. Because of the central location in Hyde Park, after the event you are close to beer and pizza next door at The Parlor or a glass of wine down the street at Vino Vino.
Services for Artists
Gallery Black Lagoon is extremely beneficial to the artists featured in the gallery. Something very important to note is the artists are not restricted to a contract preventing them from having art at other galleries. Aside from the art featured at the gallery, the artists are free to feature their art in other locations, both in and outside the city. Lastly, the gallery also offers framing services to the artists featured. This is especially useful for artists who print or paint their work onto a stretch canvas.
Yoga Classes
If you’ve ever driven by the black and yellow bricked gallery, you might’ve been greeted by a mural of the creature from the black lagoon. Additionally, you might’ve seen signs for yoga. The gallery hosts yoga classes seven days a week, featuring 12 teachers leading 18 classes a week.
Yoga is a really cool use of space. Not only does it fill the gallery when it’s not being used for an opening ceremony, but it also gives yoga participants a unique environment, surrounded with visual art. Even cooler, they get a sneak peak of upcoming art before it premieres.
Because the visual art creates such an interesting atmosphere, the gallery is also open to rent for private events, concerts or cocktail socials.
Gallery Black Lagoon is a special place in the heart of Hyde Park. You’ll enjoy a great outing if you want to check out some cool art, hang out at a gallery opening or even take some yoga classes. All the while, you’ll be surrounded by amazing and beautiful art.
