Mel Brooks’ Broadway Musical Young Frankenstein In Austin!

Posted on March 7, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

Young_Frankenstein_BackdropCheck out what is coming to Austin this weekend. Young Frankenstein, the side-splitting Broadway musical, will be on stage live at the Long Center for the Performing Arts.

The Austinot will be spending an evening in the castle of Dr. Frankenstein – oops, I mean Fronkensteen – and his snarky servant Igor.

Very few stories can compare with the comedic genius of Young Frankenstein. I make a point to watch the movie every year.

A lighthearted parody of the traditional horror genre, the story revolves around Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of the infamous Dr. Frankenstein.

A well-known medical lecturer and teacher, Frederick has done his best to distance himself from his grandfather’s reputation. He even went so far as to change the pronunciation of his last name.

Can you blame him? Not a lot of raised hands when “Dr. Frankenstein” asks for volunteers in anatomy class.

Mel Brooks immortalized the dancing Frankenstein.

Things change when Dr. F. inherits his grandfather’s castle in Transylvania. He travels to the estate and soon realizes the depth of his grandfather’s genius.

With help from the hunchbacked Igor (who mockingly pronounces it “Eye-Gore”), Dr. Frankenstein takes up his grandfather’s project of recreating life. He succeeds.

The townspeople remember the legacy of the Frankenstein family, so the doctor struggles to train his grunting monster to function in polite society. Some things go right and some go wrong – okay, mostly wrong – as people begin to catch on to Frankenstein’s schemes.

Young Frankenstein the Musical opened on Broadway in November 2007. It has been nominated for countless awards, spanning from the Tonys to the Grammys. In 2008 it won the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Broadway.com Audience Award for Best Musical!

There is so much to look forward to in this show. From what I hear, fans will be happy to see iconic scenes like “Putting on the Ritz” recreated.

Lucky for us Ausinites, the musical will be performed once on Saturday the 10th and twice on Sunday the 11th. Personally I have been dying to see Young Frankenstein. Hopefully we will run into one another there!

Do you have Transylvania Mania?
