Glamp Like an Airstream Champ at Lake Bastrop North Shore Park

I wouldn’t describe myself as an outdoorsman. Sure, I love sitting outside, preferably with a taco and a beverage. And yes, one of my favorite activities is riding my bicycle around Lady Bird Lake’s Hike and Bike Trail.

But I’ll be real with you guys. I’m not great at the great outdoors. Yet, there I was at Lake Bastrop’s North Shore Park in late November, sitting outside by a roaring fire as the temperature dropped below 30 degrees.

Despite the lack of tech at my hands, I could not have been more content. I breathed in the fresh air and stared up at the stars that were bursting out of the dark sky. And perhaps most importantly, I thought about how lucky I was to have a cozy (and heated) Airstream next to me. When I finally decided to call it a night, I did so in perfect comfort. For a night, I was Austin’s newest glamping devotee taking full advantage of nature.

Glamping Option at Lake Bastrop North Shore Park

Lower Colorado River Authority’s Lake Bastrop North Shore Park recently added an option that’s perfect for outdoor-challenged people like me. Actually, it’s perfect for anyone who wants to experience nature comfortably. Five new 25-foot Flying Cloud Airstreams sit on the campground with a view of the lake. When I received an invitation to go glamping, I jumped on it.

The campground is an easy 45-minute drive from downtown Austin. I arrived an hour before sunset, laughing to myself that I picked the coldest night of the year for this excursion. Next time, when it’s warmer, I’ll be taking full advantage of the kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and canoeing. There’s fishing and hiking to be done, as well.

My goal for this visit was less about the activities and more about relaxing into the glamping lifestyle for a night. Spoiler alert: I can’t wait to go back.

Airstream Accommodations

The sleek, stainless Airstreams are top of the line. The inside of mine was spacious, clean, and livable. Each Airstream sleeps four people comfortably, with a queen bed and two twins perpendicular to each other. All linens are provided.

The unit also included a bathroom and shower (with towels). There are two TVs, a DVD player, and a stereo. The kitchen comes with everything you need: fridge, stove top, microwave, dishes, silverware, and coffee maker. Just bring clothes, toiletries, and some food to cook, and you’re set.

Most importantly for my stay, the Airstream was heated! If you go during the hotter months, you can rely on capable dual AC units.

Relaxing on the Outdoor Patio

The hangout area next to each Airstream is immaculate. This aspect of my visit blew me away. There’s a picnic table, chairs, gas grill, and massive fire pit. Christmas lights create a festive atmosphere.

As the temperature dropped, I started a fire. Yes, I had a starter log and lighter, but still! I started a fire all by myself! And it roared. Once I got the electric grill going, I cooked my grocery store-purchased marinated meats. I was officially roughing it.

I enjoyed the fire for hours, rotating my seat to make sure every side of me got the attention it needed. Once I had seen enough shooting stars for one night, I crawled into the heated Airstream and rested on my laurels.

Sunrise Over the Lake

In the morning, I felt rested and rejuvenated. It’s strange how a little break from the “real world” can do that for you. I walked through the frost-covered grass to the edge of the lake, where I watched the sunrise. I imagined fellow campers whispering to each other, “There goes the guy who survived last night with only everything he possibly needed, and more.”

Strolling around the park, I took in the scenery. Not a bad Wednesday morning! Soon enough, I was showered, dressed, and on my way back to my office in downtown Austin. Busy people take note: it’s possible to do this during the work week. What a microadventure!

Fun for Everyone

I went into this experience thinking glamping was for me because it was less extreme than camping in a tent. I left with the understanding that glamping is a great option not only for people like me, but for avid campers as well. You just can’t beat the convenience! With everything included at a price of $225 per night (minimum two nights), you can enjoy nature without the planning, packing, and setting up a campsite that’s typically required.
