Skip Traffic for Quality Food at The Rotten Bunch in Northwest Austin

When it comes to high-quality restaurants in Austin, many people think they need to head downtown. But they don’t. The Rotten Bunch Wine Bar + Kitchen in north Austin has become—hands down—my favorite restaurant. The food is delicious; it’s in my ‘hood; and I don’t have to pay to park.

I love The Rotten Bunch so much that I’ve gone back countless times and I’ve been telling everyone I know about it. Now it’s your turn to get the scoop.

The Rotten Bunch Backstory

Owners Arik Scot Williams and Alan Thomas believe a restaurant should be fun and accessible, while providing quality food, wine, and beer. They wanted a neighborhood vibe, so they decided to open The Rotten Brunch in the Avery Ranch neighborhood of northwest Austin.

The Rotten Bunch stays true to its Austin roots with many local craft beers on the menu. Happy hour, which is Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., is a great time to check out the atmosphere, peruse the menu, and take advantage of drink specials.

I was so happy to find this spot serving original, creative dishes. It keeps me coming back for more.

What’s on the Menu?

I’ve already tasted many of the dishes, but it’s hard to choose favorites!

If I had to pick one dish that trumps them all, then it would have to be the pan seared oyster mushrooms. The mushrooms are served with shallot sofrito, thyme, and reggiano brodo. The sauce alone is to die for! It’s rich, indulgent, and completely satisfying.

Here are some more of my favorite items:

• Roasted beets and za’atar served with sesame, sumac, honey, yogurt, and mint
• Patatas bravas, which are fried potatoes with paprika and garlic, with red wine sauce and mayonnaise
• Truffled burrata, which is cream-filled mozzarella served with melted leeks, sautéed asparagus, and ham crisp
• Hanger steak and chimichurri, served with patatas bravas and roasted broccoli
• Parisian gnocchi and chicken, served with basil pesto, piquillo peppers, and pine nuts

Dessert changes frequently, but the sticky toffee pudding is a regular. Sweet, but not too sweet, and served warm. I recently tried the rocky road terrain. If you’re not a chocolate lover, you will be after you try this dessert.

Atmosphere Is All Fun and Games

Inside the dining area of the restaurant, you’ll find dim lighting and a warm space. Pick a corner table or booth for a romantic evening out, or let loose with friends during happy hour.

An enclosed patio is out back. If you’re in the mood for some fun and games, The Rotten Bunch has plenty to choose from:

• Chess
• Board games
• Shuffleboard
• Darts

The vintage furniture adds a touch of style, while still being casual and comfortable.

I don’t get to spend as much time downtown as I like, nor can I usually hit up the eclectic neighborhoods of east or south Austin. Since I’m usually in my little corner of northwest Austin, it makes me incredibly happy when restaurant owners find other parts of Austin to call home. I like being able to have an amazing meal close by, and not be stuck in traffic while I digest.

The Rotten Bunch is my new neighborhood hangout.
