Austinot Weekend Concert Picks October 18 2019

Howdy, awesome music lovers! ACL Fest 2019 is officially in the rear view. While I’m still recovering from a weekend of listening, posting, and running from stage to stage, I have just enough in me to recommend some rad music for this this weekend.

This time around, we showcase my favorite local shoegaze band, a world/folk duo, and traditional ska/reggae plucked straight from the soul of Jamaica. Listen local, friends!

Austin’s Align Massage Company Intentionally Embraces Clinical Approach

Leah Levitan sets to work, firm hands and laser focus in motion. “I make a point of listening to people to know what’s going on with their bodies,” she tells me. “Otherwise, how can I help them?”

It is something of her personal mantra as a healer. I mean, we’ve all had those soft hand, cold fish type of massages along the way, the ones we want to love, but that leave us wanting so much more. Align Massage is not that kind of place and will never be.

Next stop on Jonas’ quest to shed light on the underworld that is Austin’s speakeasy scene: Firehouse Lounge. As my Austin’s Speakeasy Secrets series continues, I’m noticing some similarities among my subjects.

With March being Women’s History Month, it’s a great time to celebrate women in a special way. Lucky for us, Austin has an answer for not just this month, but any time of the year you want to support women, shop local, join a community party, or participate in a multi-generational event.

Frida Friday ATX started as a monthly women’s market, offering the opportunity for local women of color makers to show and sell their work. With this founding mission, Frida Friday ATX developed a space that’s not just a market, but a creative, communal space. The women vendors give back, as well, with a local cause and/or community partner selected as a beneficiary for each event. [Read more…]

Discada Taco Truck Chefs in Austin

What do farming machinery and tacos have in common? If you ask the chefs at Discada, they’ll tell you it’s the modified plow disc from a tractor, a cooking method traditional to northern Mexico.

With one of the shortest menus you’ve ever seen, this Austin taco truck brings a cherished childhood recipe to life, using a preparation technique that’s one of a kind.

Empowered Coffee Designs Meaningful Opportunities for Employees

Editor’s Note: Empowered Coffee shuttered in January 2019 due to a rent hike.

What comes to mind when you think of coffee shops in Austin? Maybe an industrial interior, memorable coffee, latte art, or the barista–that bearded, tattooed, man-bun sporting espresso master. At Empowered Coffee, you will find all of these, except the barista you first envisioned.

This unpretentious coffee shop has one goal: serve a great cup of coffee. No long lines, complicated drinks, or pseudo-intellectual conversations. Empowered Coffee employs adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDDs). The mission is to empower IDD adults by providing meaningful employment and growth opportunities. [Read more…]

Be Transported to Roaring Twenties at Parker Jazz Club in Downtown Austin

Parker Jazz Club Austin

Step back in time to the Roaring Twenties at Parker Jazz Club in downtown Austin. Situated underground like all the coolest clubs, Parker Jazz Club acts as an incubator for the music and the sensibility of another era. Set your sights on a whole new music experience, complemented by classic cocktails and a sultry aura.

Despite Austin’s outspoken love for live music, we are somewhat lacking in world-class, traditional jazz. Parker Jazz Club intends to change that. Jazz music evokes a host of strong feelings for many, calling to mind a different time and place. Walking down the staircase into the dark, elegant club, I felt as though I could be in Chicago, New York, or Paris in the ’20s or ’50s. By design, Parker Jazz Club stands apart from the typical downtown Austin bar. [Read more…]

Oddwood Ales Delivers Brews and Bites to Growing East Austin Scene

April 9, 2018 by Bill Tucker Leave a Comment

Oddwood Ales Beer Austin

If the Austin food and drink scene was a farm, and every business type was an animal, then craft beer would be a flock of rabbits. Every month, a new brewery opens its doors to a population thirsty for hops, malt, and yeasty goodness. Grabbing a foothold in this crowded pen can be a challenge. But for the brothers Ziebarth of Oddwood Ales, an underground cult following has grown into a brewpub with big dreams.

With approachable beer, tantalizing food, and a warm, cozy exterior, this brand new east Austin hangout is exactly what the neighborhood ordered. [Read more…]

Austin Brunch at Native Hostel

Fried chicken sandwich at Native

Brunch is a way of life. There’s an art to finding the perfect place, with the perfect vibe, that serves that egg just the way you like it. Austin originals Magnolia Cafe, Kerbey Lane, and Juan in a Million have fan followings that could put a celebrity to shame. The oldies are goldies, and nobody doubts that. But consider having a go at some of the newer restaurants Austin has to offer. I did the research for you, and suggest these six local spots to satisfy your brunch cravings.
