Keep Austin Weird Festival and 5K This Weekend

June 21, 2012 by Dustin Vegas Leave a Comment

The slogan “Keep Austin Weird” is a big deal. It’s a state of mind, a dedication to supporting local culture. The Keep Austin Weird Festival and 5K is a manifestation of that spirit. And it’s happening this weekend.

Combining the values and pastimes of Austinites, the festival is a chance to celebrate all the great things that makes Austin, Texas so weird.

Helping out Austin Parks

The Keep Austin Weird Festival + 5K is your chance to support the Austin Parks Foundation. This is the organization that keeps Zilker and our other parks clean and beautiful. That’s not to mention the miles of hiking, walking and biking trails as well. Oh, and the river banks. Those too. The festival is a chance to donate our money and thanks to an organization that has given the Austin community so much over the years. Donations are accepted at the festival and online.

Listening to Good Tunes

Since Austin is the live music capitol of the world, expect to see a ton of people dancing and jamming to local and out of state musicians. New York band Semi Precious Weapons, who recently toured alongside Lady Gaga, will be headlining. Also performing are Ben Rector, Ian McLagan, Saints of Valory, Wounded City and Christy Hays.

Music is the lifeblood of Austin, Texas. Most of the festival will involve music in some shape or form.

Supporting Local Businesses

The Keep Austin Weird Fest is also a chance to support the businesses that make Austin unique. Artisans and businesses set up shop across the festival in booths. You’ll get a chance to to chat and get to know many movers and shakers who support the Austin economy. For example, Mellow Johnny’s bike shop has set up a bicycle parking lot for festival guests. Just pull up to the bike corral, no lock needed, and their guards will ensure that your bike remains untouched by would-be thieves. Keep any eye out for many other businesses as well.

Staying Healthy

Why? Because tacos.

The festival ends with a a 5K fun run. That’s 3.1 miles for us non-marathon types. Though three miles may seem daunting, the people and atmosphere will calm any fear caused by such a feat.  The music continues through the run to keep you entertained and motivated. You’ll be surrounded by groovy people sporting even groovier costumes. Yeah, it’s a costume race. You’ll get extra points in my book if you show up as the Hamburgler while carrying a Big Mac.

In addition, many fun stops will dot the 5K as you run. These are booths and activities to check out as you run. This year’s fun stops are:

  • Amy’s Ice Cream
  • Austin Culture Map
  • Brats ‘n Beer
  • Dos Equis
  • Dub Academy – DJ
  • H-E-B
  • Juanita’s Bonitas
  • And many more!

Where Do I Learn More?

It all takes place at The Long Center on 701 W. Riverside Drive.

The festival opens at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23rd and the 5K run starts at 7 p.m.

Head to the Keep Austin Weird Festival +5K website to learn more and snag tickets! You’d better hurry. Supplies are limited.

@DustyVegas asks:

What costume are you planning to wear for the festival?
