On February 8, 2012, the winners of The Austin Chronicle‘s 20th annual Short Story Contest were announced at an evening reception.
BookPeople, one of the sponsors of the contest, hosted the reception with finger foods and wine – a delightful mingling of literary lovers and slightly apprehensive finalists.
The contest was narrowed down to ten finalists by February 3rd, and getting to that point alone was a tremendous achievement. This year, 568 short stories were submitted!
At the reception, two honorary mentions received $50 gift certificates to BookPeople. First, Second and Third Places received cash prizes:
- Third Place – $250
- Second Place – $350
- First Place – $800
I’m happy to know that Austin does its literature contests up right!
After the winners were announced, the top three stories were read by the respective authors.
Melanie Westerberg won Third Place with “Sheds”
Dana De Greff won Second Place with “The Butcher’s Hands”
Mary Terrier took the First Place prize of $800 with “To Need, The Women Say”
You can actually read all three stories online. Maybe you want to get the inside scoop, so you can take the top prize next year! Read the top three stories by clicking here for AustinChronicle.com.
Congratulations to all the winners from the Austinot! Thanks for letting us crash your party.
