Looking for a date spot in Austin this weekend? Well hold on and let me tell you about a unique place you can check out with your significant other. Austin is known for its off-the-wall approaches to art. This weekend, you have a chance to get an artistic take on something you may have seen a thousand times before, just never like this.
Local artist Heather Trolleston has been working with the “Urban Musuem,” named Art on the Way, to display her Spiral Plexus artwork.
Art On The Way (AOTW) is an Austin nonprofit organization/museum which purposefully utilizes public and private plots of land that would otherwise fall into disuse. AOTW reclaims this land and does something incredibly special and beautiful it. You may have seen a few of their older displays driving across the city. Basically, they transform forgotten pieces of land into venues where local artists can display their talent. Normally, many of these artists would not have the ability to display their art for a mass audience to appreciate. Art on the Way has been a forerunner as a launchpad for Austin artists who are trying to make a name for themselves in this hyper-competitive environment. Artists like Heather Trolleston, Austin’s Emerging Artist of the Year in 2009, for example.
Heather has created and displayed her most recent piece of art through Art on the Way. Its final days are coming soon, so everybody should take the time to experience it for themselves. The outdoor exhibit Spiral Plexus utilizes 2,000 acrylic windspinners, 9,200 hooks, springs and swivels on 320 ft. of a steel frame. It creates an intricate, swirling tapestry that flows, twirls and sways with the wind, reflecting the Texas sunlight off metallic windspinners.
Standing 12 feet tall, 9 feet wide, and 15 feet long, Spiral Plexus was designed to catch the eye of people who have seen a thousand wind spinners in their life before, just not together. It is a behemoth of creativity and elegance. If you are looking for a neat date location this weekend, try the Art on the Way museum. There you can view the projects of many local artists.
See it for yourself at 828 West 6th Street this weekend.
