This Sunday, August 23rd, Garbo’s Lobster Truck and Dock & Roll Diner go head to head over who makes the best lobster roll in Austin. Now in its second year, Mobile Food Throwdown, produced by FoodTrailersAustin.com, invites ticketed attendees and a panel of local judges to settle the score once and for all. At Austin Beerworks this weekend, be part of history in the making while reveling in fabulous food, local beer and good company.
What You Can Look Forward To
Between 11:30 AM and 3 PM on Sunday, basic ticket holders ($25) will be handed half a lobster roll and a side from both food trucks. The trucks have the option of repurposing a current menu item or creating a new, speciality, totally off-menu masterpiece. In the other hand, attendees will have an Austin Beerworks pint glass to take home, which will be temporarily full of beer from the tap wall (additional pours available for purchase).
In addition to all that goodness, awesome ticket holders ($33.25) will also receive a sexy event t-shirt from our talented friends over at Kong Screen Printing (must preorder by today at 5 PM to receive t-shirt at this price).
After eating, attendees will cast their ballot for Garbo’s or Dock & Roll, to determine the master of the sea. Voting closes at 2:15 PM and the award ceremony will take place around 2:30 PM.
While not busy eating, drinking or holding the future of two food trucks in your hands, enjoy music over the speakers and participate in trivia with prizes from Austin Beerworks, Garbo’s Lobster Truck, Dock & Roll Diner, Kong Screen Printing, Birds Barbershop, Trucklandia and other local businesses.
Yes, there will be a line for both food trucks (250 attendees…two trucks…you can do the math)! Feel free to bring a folding chair, water bottles and/or coolers with ice, and prepare to enjoy the atmosphere and company of fellow Austinites who love mobile food as much as you do. Just don’t forget to arrive by 1 PM when check-in closes.
How Judging Works
There are two voting categories at Mobile Food Throwdown. The “People’s Vote” is the result of all the attendee ballots collected during the event.
There will also be a panel of local judges who are involved in the community or the food industry. Their collective voice will result in the “Judge’s Vote.” The Judge’s Vote will rely on a stricter scorecard type of rating based on factors besides taste, like composition and presentation.
This year’s panel of judges includes:
- Jae Kim – Chi’Lantro owner and champion of last year’s Mobile Food Throwdown
- John Conley – Austin Marathon Director
- Amanda Dugan – KXAN News traffic reporter
- Andrew Chase – Contributing Blogger at Austinot.com
Story Behind Mobile Food Throwdown
The first annual Mobile Food Throwdown last year was a big success, pitting Chi’Lantro against Peached Tortilla. Says event organizer Tony Yamanaka of FoodTrailersAustin.com, “They really got into the event by talking a little trash on social media and rallying their fanbase to attend the event. We sold out of all 250 tickets for the first event with a few days to go.”
When asked what inspired him to start the event in the first place, Tony said he loves to host events “to showcase that food trucks aren’t just a thing that you go to when you’re hungry, but they’re places to meet/chat/hang out and socialize. Austin thrives off of the communal support for local business. That support creates an insatiable appetite for food trucks with fiercely passionate followers. We heard for quite a while that truck A is better than truck B, so we thought this was a great, fun and exciting way to pit Austin’s heavyweights in niche cuisines head-to-head to crown a champ.”
