In Austin, we are fortunate to have so many natural spaces to enjoy. We have lakes, rivers, and hiking. But simply being in nature is only one part of forging a deeper connection with it. Many of us have felt the need to acquire survival know-how. But for those of us who spend the majority of our time within city limits, learning these skills can be a daunting task. Where do we begin? Luckily, we have a starting line and it’s located at Earth Native Wilderness School.
11 Best Picnic Spots in Austin
For me, summer was always the time to be out and about…until I moved to Texas. I don’t know about you guys, but when temperatures hit the high 90’s, I want to hide in the comfort of my air conditioned apartment and never leave. But with fall finally here and the air cooling down, I couldn’t be more excited about spending time outside, walking the streets of the city, and–my favorite–planning picnics! Thankfully, Austin has quite a few spots that are perfect for dining outdoors. In my experience, these are the 11 best picnic spots in Austin. [Read more…]
Lone Star Court Transports Funky Austin Vibes to The Domain
It’s often said there are two types of Austinites: those who live and play south of the river and those who do so on the north side. Though there may be a clear distinction between The Domain’s high-end sparkle and downtown Austin’s industrial/retro feel, Lone Star Court marries the two quite nicely.
The boutique hotel features 123 rooms, including three suites, and has been open since Christmas Eve 2013. Here you’ll find retro touches paired with modern amenities and convenience, in the heart of The Domain’s residential and commercial district. Recently, Lone Star Court invited me to spend a night experiencing its posh digs, for a staycation and taste of the north Austin life. [Read more…]
Austinite Kendra Wright’s Year of Fear Encourages Others to Leap
“I was the least likely person to be adventurous or outgoing,” Kendra Wright pointed out. She grew up in the Midwest and was born with Cerebral Palsy. Most of her childhood was spent in and out of doctor’s offices and learning how to walk, which made her wary of adventure and stepping out of her comfort zone. Her childhood experiences prompted her Year of Fear project and semi-nomadic lifestyle today.
Look for Katie and Her Snack Cart at Your Austin Office Building
Austin is amazing, fun, and special because of its people. Yes, there are a lot of transplants, including me, but y’all made this city too lovable for us to stay away. I officially blame you, the locals, for making me fall in love with this city. Speaking of locals, I recently had a chance to meet a young lady named Katie. I learned about her from my office manager, who had circulated a flyer about her wonderful service, Katie’s Snack Cart. [Read more…]
Enjoy Moonlight Bat Float and Support Texas River School
Guest article by Caitlin Jackson
You’ve seen the bats from the bridge, but how about from the water? Under a full moon? Texas River School has an event that allows you to do both. It’s called Moonlight Bat Float. Guided by moonlight and entertained by live music, you set out on Lady Bird Lake in a flotilla of kayaks and canoes. Just as the sun goes down, the bats fly overhead while you glide on the water, away from traffic and noise.

Austin’s Only Women-owned Barbershop Offers Fresh Cuts in Vintage Style
Guest article by Mathis Kennington
More female entrepreneurs are making a mark on industries that used to be the domain of men, and Austin women are leading the charge. Nowhere is this more evident than at Austin’s newest barbershop, owned by sisters, Sarita and Clarita Sanchez.
Barbon’s Barbershop started as a creative dream shared by Sarita, whose obsession with the art of barbering earned her a reputation as one of the city’s finest, and Clarita, whose business skills made her a perfect fit to run the shop. It’s pretty obvious this sibling pair is a match made in barber heaven. [Read more…]
Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts and Events in Austin
“How can I help?” Hurricane Harvey is wreaking havoc on Texas and parts of Louisiana right now. Harvey arrived in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane, with deadly force and several months’ worth of rainfall.
