Groovy Sunday at South Austin Brewing Company

Raising a glass to Groovy Sunday at South Austin Brewing Company

This guest blog post is by Edgar Barguiarena.

Sometimes Friday and Saturday don’t give you enough time to take full advantage of the weekend. You’re left wanting more for your Sunday, but you want to try something different. After you go to brunch and get started with a few mimosas, you want to enjoy the last few hours of freedom you have left. If you’re still jonesing for live music and great beer, South Austin Brewing Company has your solution.

South Austin Brewing Company got their start in late 2010 with two signature brews that are still selling strong today: the Belgian Style Golden Ale and their Saison D’Austin. Each brew is featured in a hand-corked 750-ml bottle that looks almost as good as it tastes. Sound familiar? You may have seen these beers at your local grocery store or liquor shop.

South Austin Brewing has done an impressive [Read more...]

Austin Flea T-Shirt

Austinot Brittany checking out the event t-shirts at Austin Flea

Every 6-8 weeks, Austin Flea gathers dozens of Austin’s most creative individuals together to showcase and sell their unique products.

The Highball hosted the event for two years.

But due to current renovations there, The Rattle Inn has stepped up as host. The March 2013 event at 610 Nueces (off W. 6th St.) was jam-packed with vendors: downstairs in the bar and lounge area, upstairs on the patio, and lining the sidewalk along Nueces. [Read more...]

Attendance Explodes at Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival 2013

Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival The Parish

Moontower attendees wait for a show outside The Parish

This guest blog post is by Kelly Love.

The Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival - yes, another festival in Austin! – premiered last year at main stage presenter Paramount Theatre. In its second year, the festival brought over 100 talented funny people here from April 24-27 2013.

This year’s fest saw a rise in attendance and badge sales, along with the introduction of midnight headliner performances at the Paramount. As with most festivals, it’s impossible to be everywhere at once. But since Bill Hader of SNL fame was one of this year’s headliners, I’ll give you a summary as Hader’s popular NYC club-hopping character Stefon (who made an appearance during his show) would put it (it helps to read the following in Stefon’s voice): [Read more...]

Start the Month Off Right: First Saturday at Independence Brewing Co.

Independence Brewing Co LogoThis guest blog post is by David Thomas.

As the typical male, when I first became a beer drinker I went for the cheap stuff first: malt liquor.

Gradually, I developed taste buds and grew a taste for dark beers. Ambers, bocks and stouts have this flavor that I dig.

I have a buddy named Jim who’s also a beer fan. He recommended a beer called Bootlegger Brown by Independence Brewing Co. here in Austin. I gave it a shot and immediately became a fan. Jim also told me about First Saturday, an event that Independence Brewing Co. hosts once a month. Four years later, I finally decided to go.

First Saturday

Getting to the brewery is easy. It’s located in a business park on Todd Lane, just south of Hwy 71. Normally I might’ve had difficulty finding it. But on First Saturday, the throngs of people waiting to get in were a dead giveaway.

First Saturday at Independence Brewing Co

With a line like this, First Saturday must be awesome

Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet

Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet

This guest post is by Vol Montgomery.

Ask your neighbors what Memorial Day means to them. Is it a three-day weekend? A barbecue? A mattress sale? What do you think Memorial Day should mean?

Carry the Load – Austin will help bring back the true meaning of Memorial Day. This one-day, non-profit event honors veterans and active duty service members, law enforcement officers, firefighters and their families. It raises funds to support the meaningful work of four local charities: The Comfort Crew for Military Kids, Heroes on the Water, Folds of Honor Foundation and Serve Who Serve.

Carry the Load – Austin will take place on May 25, 2013 at Reveille Peak Ranch, a 1,300-acre outdoor adventure and event center just outside of Burnet, one hour from Austin. Founded three years ago in Dallas by Clint Bruce, a former Navy Seal, Carry the Load is coming to the Central Texas area for the first time. [Read more...]

Grown-Up Spelling Bee Propels Literacy Coalition of Central Texas

Great Grown Up Spelling Bee at Zach Theatre

The 10th Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee took place at the Zach Theatre

Do you take for granted your ability to read and write? Whether you do or not, this statistic will blow your mind: 1 in 5 native, English-speaking adults in Central Texas can’t read or write well enough to fill out a job application.

Founded in 2001, the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas is doing something to change this startling fact. This local organization exists to improve the quality of literacy education in our area, and to increase its availability for those who need it. It’s a centralized hub that coordinates with more than 70 literacy programs in the Austin area.

As with any non-profit, fundraising is always a requirement. Ten years ago, the Literacy Coalition came up with a fun way to raise money, while providing a unique night of entertainment for [Read more...]

AMP Awards Showcase Shakey Graves, Mother Falcon & Friends at Moody

Austin Music People UnGala at Moody Theater

Entering the Moody Theater for AMP UnGala

Through her work as Executive Director for Austin Music People, Jennifer Houlihan is devoted to advocacy and fundraising for the Austin music industry. She keeps a finger on the pulse of the industry’s well-being and does her part to ensure its growth. ”The music community is the cultural soul of Austin, an economic engine contributing more than $1.6 billion a year to the local economy.”

But Houlihan’s no Atlas and she can’t do it alone. So on April 21, 2013, Austin Music People (AMP) hosted its largest fundraiser of the year at the Moody Theater, home to Austin City Limits. The turn-out for AMP UnGala was high. Who can stay away from talent like Shakey Graves and Bright Light Social Hour, and well-known local industry staples like Margaret Moser (Austin Chronicle) and Laurie Gallardo (KUT)? [Read more...]

Austin Jazz: Church on Monday Event with Elias Haslanger and Friends

Church on Monday at Continental Club Gallery

The Continental Club hosts Austin jazz every Monday night

Jazz is restless, it won’t stay put and it never will. -J. J. Johnson, Trombonist

While most seasoned musicians agree that jazz is difficult to define, few deny its worldwide appeal.

With standard elements like improvisation and group interaction, this genre of music attracts the very best musicians to collaborate with one another.

There are several weekly Austin jazz events. Though we haven’t attended them all, one that we highly recommend without reservation is Church on Monday at the Continental Club Gallery.

Fight for Air Climb at Frost Bank Tower

Participants wait their turn to scale the Frost Bank Tower!

This guest blog post is by David Thomas.

Remember when your parents would scream at you to not run up the stairs? Guess what? The American Lung Association is telling you it’s okay: on April 27, 2013 this well-respected non-profit is having their 4th Annual Fight for Air Climb fundraiser event at the Frost Bank Tower.

Participating Austinites have the opportunity to climb roughly 31 flights of stairs!

In all seriousness, many of us know someone who is affected by lung disease and Jessica Vess isn’t any different. “My brother has asthma, my in-laws have struggled to stop smoking, and my husband’s grandfather suffered from [Read more...]

Mike Milligan and the Altar Boyz: Talent and Attitude Weekly on 6th

Mike MilliganThis guest blog post is by Kyle Bailey.

Mike Milligan has a great smile.  It’s toothy, wide and communicates his warm and approachable personality. When he walks on stage, though, all of that vanishes. Once he grabs that microphone and takes center stage, Mike Milligan is six feet two inches of energy, growl and talent. A consummate frontman, he grabs your attention and doesn’t let go until he and his band are done with you.

Mike Milligan and the Altar Boyz have been performing “Texas Blues with Louisiana Attitude” in Austin and around the country for more than eight years, rolling out a unique blend of music that is equal parts blues, rock, bayou and pure energy. Powered by Mike’s amazing four and a half octave vocal range and unique vocal tone, you find yourself being impressed with the band as a whole and with Mike himself as a frontman. [Read more...]

Ben Livingston Livens Austin Community Through Music and Neon Art

Ben Livingston Continental Club Gallery 2013

Ben Livingston and the That’s What She Said band at Continental Club Gallery

We have eyes to appreciate the icons that contribute to our local pride: murals that tourists take home on t-shirts, the buildings that compose our recognizable downtown skyline, the beloved local businesses that we would stand in front of bulldozers to protect.

But partly because so many Austinites are recent additions to the city, and partly because many of the most integral community architects work quietly behind the scenes, we don’t always know where credit is due.

Ben Livingston’s fingerprints decorate Austin and his musical sound has been heard literally around the world. A biographic tome could be written about his adventures and talents – and I would gladly volunteer as the first reader – but an exhaustive tale of Livingston’s life is beyond the scope of this Austinot article. Instead, my goal is to acquaint a new generation of Austinites with a neighbor worth knowing. [Read more...]

Bandana Ball Gives Hope to Children & Their Families in Central Texas

Brooke Hester at 2013 Bandana Ball

Brooke Hester’s spirit of joy and hope was contagious at the 2013 Bandana Ball

Twirling and dancing on the lush green grass of Wild Onion Ranch, a little girl was wearing heart shaped sunglasses and sporting a smile that could melt a heart of stone. Though she was surrounded by a thousand other people, including philanthropists, press members, and even celebrities, she was clearly the star of the show.

And rightfully so.

Two years ago, five and a half year old Brooke Hester was diagnosed with Stage IV High Risk Neuroblastoma, a cancer that is common among infants and children, and difficult to treat. Upon learning the news, Brooke’s parents Beau and Jessica committed to do whatever was necessary, traveling wherever they needed to in order to find a cure. [Read more...]

What’s All the Fuss About the Austin Music Awards?

Bill Carter and the Blame with Gary Clark Jr. at Austin Music Awards

Bill Carter and the Blame performs with Gary Clark Jr. at Austin Music Awards 2013

It may happen only one night a year, but the reverberations last all year long. In a city where music is everything, there isn’t a local band within earshot that wouldn’t love to see their name in lights at the Austin Music Awards.

The 31st annual Austin Music Awards took place at the height of SXSW 2013 at Austin Music Hall. Much-loved Austin musicians like Ben Kweller, Alejandro Escovedo, Brownout, and Gary Clark Jr. graced the stage, and there were even rumored sightings of Johnny Depp.

There are similarities between the Austin Music Awards and awards shows like the Grammys or the Country Music Awards that you might see on television. But if you’re going to give up a night in Austin during one of the most exciting times of the year – and shell out a little bit of cash in the process – I want to make sure you know what you’re in for.
