For today’s Austinot Music Podcast, we are featuring local musician Daniel Kalin…but you can just call him Kai. He is originally from the Northeast, and has brought to Austin a truly unique blend of classic rock. It’s safe to say that Kai truly makes his music his own, blending genres left and right.
Sometimes you’ll catch him heavy into country sounds, like in his song “Heart of Fire” that I use in the intro to this week’s episode. At other times, Kai blends so many different styles together and creates something wholly individual. That’s why I love Austin music. You get a little bit of everything here.
Kai has a large presence in the local music scene in Austin. You can catch him playing solo acts or collaborating with other musicians at venues across town. I have spoken with him at multiple shows, and his personality is as eclectic as his music. In short, Kai is a poet – with or without his guitar.
Pay close attention to Kai’s lyrics and you’ll hear strong themes of nature and emotion. Aside from his genre bending, my favorite thing about Kai’s music may be his ability to convey layered meaning through clever use of metaphor and simile. His complex lyricism and musicality work hand-in-hand.
You can find some of Kai’s music online at his ReverbNation page, including a few songs that are not featured on the podcast episode today. Check ‘em out!
In the meantime, tell us what you think of Kai’s music. Leave a comment down below and tell us your thoughts. Musicians like Kai work hard to hone their craft, and I know he’d love to hear that you enjoyed it.
@DustyVegas asks:
What band would you compare Kai with?
